The Best Things To Do in the City This Season

No visit to Barcelona is complete without standing before the Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí's extraordinary and still unfinished basilica that has been under construction since 1882. Summer is a spectacular time to visit, when the light pours through the stained glass windows and fills the interior with an extraordinary kaleidoscope of color. The basilica is one of the most visited monuments in Europe, and advance booking is absolutely essential during summer. The towers offer breathtaking views over the city, and the surrounding park is a beautiful place to sit and take in the full scale of Gaudí's vision from the outside.

Barcelona is one of the very few major European cities where world-class architecture and a long sandy Mediterranean beach coexist within the same afternoon. The city's coastline stretches for several kilometers, with beaches ranging from the iconic and buzzing Barceloneta to the quieter and more local Bogatell and Mar Bella. Hire a sun lounger, grab a cold drink from one of the chiringuitos, take a swim in the warm Mediterranean, and enjoy the simple pleasure of a beach day in one of the world's great cities.

Park Güell is one of Gaudí's most joyful and colorful creations, a UNESCO World Heritage Site set on a hillside above the city with extraordinary mosaic terraces, whimsical architecture, and sweeping panoramic views over Barcelona and the Mediterranean. The Monumental Zone at the heart of the park requires a timed entry ticket, which must be booked in advance during summer, but the surrounding free areas of the park are equally enjoyable to explore. Visit in the early morning for the best light and the smallest crowds, and allow at least two hours to do the park justice.

The Gothic Quarter is the ancient heart of Barcelona, a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets, hidden squares, Roman ruins, and beautiful Gothic architecture that rewards slow and aimless exploration. Summer evenings are a particularly magical time to wander here, when the stone facades glow in the warm light, the street musicians set up in the squares, and the bars and restaurants spill out onto the pavements. Duck into the Cathedral, find the hidden Jewish Quarter, and discover the Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, one of the most atmospheric and beautiful small squares in the entire city.

Barcelona's most celebrated street, the Passeig de Gràcia, is home to two of Gaudí's most extraordinary residential buildings: Casa Batlló and La Pedrera (Casa Milà). Both are open to visitors and both offer an extraordinary window into the genius and imagination of one of architecture's most original minds. Casa Batlló's undulating facade, extraordinary interior, and rooftop dragon are breathtaking, while La Pedrera's famous rooftop, with its warrior-like chimneys and sweeping views over the Eixample, is one of the most memorable architectural spaces in Europe. The Born neighborhood, centered around the beautiful Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar, is one of Barcelona's most vibrant and enjoyable areas to explore in summer. The narrow streets are lined with independent boutiques, excellent restaurants, and lively bars, and the shaded terraces of the Passeig del Born are a perfect spot for a long, leisurely lunch or an evening aperitivo. The Born Cultural Center, built over the ruins of an 18th-century market and residential quarter, is a fascinating and atmospheric museum that tells the story of Barcelona's history in a genuinely moving way.

Just one hour from Barcelona by train and rack railway, the extraordinary mountain monastery of Montserrat is one of the most spectacular and spiritually significant sites in all of Catalonia. The jagged, otherworldly rock formations that surround the monastery are unlike anything else in the region, and the views from the hiking trails above the monastery stretch all the way to the Mediterranean on clear days. Summer is a wonderful time to visit, though arriving early is recommended to avoid the midday heat and the largest tour groups. The Black Madonna in the basilica is one of the most venerated religious icons in Spain.

Barcelona's summer festival calendar is one of the richest and most varied of any city in Europe. The Grec Festival, which runs throughout July, brings world-class theatre, dance, music, and circus performances to venues across the city including the spectacular open-air amphitheatre on Montjuïc. The Festa Major de Gràcia in August transforms the streets of the Gràcia neighborhood into elaborately decorated outdoor stages for a week of free concerts, dancing, and festivities. And the city's ongoing programme of free outdoor concerts, film screenings, and cultural events throughout the summer makes every week feel like a celebration.

The Picasso Museum in the Born neighborhood is one of the most important and visited museums in Barcelona, housing an extraordinary collection of works by Pablo Picasso spanning his early formative years in Barcelona through to his mature masterpieces. The museum is set across five beautifully preserved medieval palaces and the collection of over 4,000 works offers an unparalleled insight into the development of one of the 20th century's greatest artists. Book tickets online in advance for summer visits and consider visiting early in the morning to enjoy the galleries before the afternoon crowds arrive.

La Boqueria is one of the most famous food markets in the world and a sensory experience unlike any other in Barcelona. The vast covered market on the Ramblas is a riot of color, smell, and energy, with stalls overflowing with fresh fruit, seafood, charcuterie, cheese, spices, and an extraordinary range of Catalan and Spanish produce. While the market has become very popular with tourists, it remains a genuine working market and a wonderful place to eat well and cheaply at one of the counter restaurants tucked among the stalls. Arrive early for the best experience and the freshest produce.

The hill of Montjuïc, rising above the port on the southwestern edge of the city, is one of Barcelona's most rewarding and versatile destinations. In summer it comes into its own, with the Grec Festival filling its amphitheatre with world-class performances, the Fundació Joan Miró offering one of the finest collections of modern art in Spain, the Castell de Montjuïc providing breathtaking views over the city and the sea, and the beautifully maintained gardens offering a cool and shaded respite from the summer heat. The Magic Fountain light show at the foot of the hill is a free and spectacular summer evening entertainment that draws large and enthusiastic crowds.

12. Take a Bike Ride Along the Waterfront

One of the most enjoyable and effortless ways to explore Barcelona's coastline in summer is by bicycle. The city has an excellent network of dedicated cycling lanes, and the flat, traffic-free promenade that runs along the entire length of the Barcelona waterfront from Barceloneta to Diagonal Mar is perfect for a leisurely ride. Bike rental is available from numerous points along the waterfront and in the city center. Combining a morning bike ride along the coast with a beach stop and a seafood lunch at one of the Barceloneta restaurants makes for one of the most satisfying summer days the city has to offer.

13. Enjoy Tapas and Vermouth in the Eixample

One of the great pleasures of a Barcelona summer is the city's deeply ingrained culture of eating and drinking outdoors. The Eixample neighborhood, with its wide boulevards and shaded terraces, is the perfect setting for a long, leisurely vermouth and tapas session in the classic Barcelona tradition. The area around the Mercat de l'Abaceria in Gràcia and the streets of the Esquerra de l'Eixample are particularly good for authentic, local tapas bars. Order a cold vermut, a plate of patatas bravas, some croquetas, and a selection of pintxos, and settle in for a long and deeply enjoyable afternoon.

14. Watch the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, the spectacular illuminated fountain at the foot of the Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, puts on one of the most impressive and completely free light and music shows in Europe throughout the summer months. The fountain's elaborate displays of colored water, light, and music draw large crowds on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings throughout the summer season and are a wonderful way to spend a warm Barcelona evening. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot and combine the show with a walk up the hill to the Palau Nacional and the Fundació Joan Miró.
