The Best Cafes in Rome 

From historic espresso bars to specialty coffee labs

 has been roasting its own beans since 1938 and is widely considered Rome's finest espresso bar. The signature gran caffè arrives pre-sugared via a secret semi-foamed method. Order at the counter, take it standing, and buy a bag of beans on your way out.

📍 Piazza di S. Eustachio, 82 — Centro Storico | $

A Prati institution since the early twentieth century, 

 is best known for its caffè con cioccolata — espresso poured over dark chocolate in a small glass. The atmosphere is warm and unhurried, the maritozzi are excellent, and the coffee is consistently among the best in the neighbourhood.

📍 Via Fabio Massimo 80/a — Prati | $$

 opens at 6am and runs on genuinely local prices. The pistachio cornetto sells out fast. Unpretentious, honest, and exactly what a Roman bar should be.

On the elegant Piazza di San Lorenzo in Lucina, 

 is one of those Roman institutions that has been part of the city's fabric for generations. The outdoor terrace is the draw: shaded tables, unhurried service and a genuinely Italic atmosphere that makes it hard to leave. Come for coffee and a pastry in the morning or linger over a granita in the afternoon. Open daily from 8am to 10pm.

📍 Piazza di S. Lorenzo in Lucina, 29 — Centro Storico | $$$

One of Rome's first serious specialty cafes, 

 near Piazza della Repubblica remains one of the best. Single-origin filter coffee, a strong espresso programme, excellent maritozzi, and an atmosphere that deliberately slows things down. Expect a queue on weekends.

on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II pairs rotating single-origin beans with seasonal pastry specials. The croissants are among the best in Rome. Open 8am to 8pm, making it one of the more flexible specialty spots in the centre.

📍 Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, 73 — Centro Storico | $$

 stands out for its exceptional coffee and a breakfast menu that goes well beyond the standard: pancakes, overnight oats, outstanding matcha and serious pastries. Closes at 4pm. Worth the detour from the centre.

 runs from breakfast through lunch with a menu that spans cornetti, avocado toast, turmeric bread with hummus and excellent matcha. Bright, relaxed, and reliably busy from mid-morning. Arrive early for the best table.

📍 Via del Pellegrino, 87 — Campo de' Fiori | $$

covers the full day: breakfast, lunch, pizza and aperitivo. The pistachio cappuccino is a house signature and the staff are genuinely warm. A neighbourhood spot that works at almost any hour.

A family-run pasticceria near Campo de' Fiori,

 has barely changed in decades. The cannoli with nuts are excellent, the coffee is strong and honest, and the prices are a welcome reminder that Rome does not have to be expensive.
