Spent a day in San Jose and came to the museum! It wasn’t busy so we had time to ourselves between each exhibit. The butterfly walk through was really cool. If you’re looking for something casual to do in downtown I’d recommend this museum

What a wonderful museum! You start off in a butterfly garden and follow through the old castle which was at one time used as a prison. It is filled with cultural artifacts that take you through Costa Rica's incredible history.  From giant spheres to antiques of 2000 years this museum is amazing!

It's the biggest museum in San José and showcases the natural beauty as well as the history of Costa Rica. The place used to be a military barrack that was converted to a national museum in the 1970s. As you enter, you will be in the butterfly garden where you see and admire the beauty of Morpho, the indigenous species of butterfly to Costa Rica. As you move upwards, you enter the interior of the building where there are temporary and permanent exhibitions. Overall, the place is very well kept, and all the explanations are both in Spanish and English. Two hours would suffice for a thorough visit.

A perfect place to learn a little about Costa Rican history. You need at least 3 hours to be able to enjoy the whole attraction. Before you arrive, you can call and ask about the day they will have special live activities.

Best museum in San Jose! San Jose in general is a vibrant underrated city and this is one of the gems for anyone interested in culture and history. Exhibits are well placed and shows off all of the beautiful aspects of Costa Rica. Would definitely recommend. All teachers and students get a nice discount as well
