On our drive from Santa Barbara to San Diego, I made a quick stop in Santa Monica to try the famous Layla Bagels! I ordered the Laika, with one half topped with avocado and the other with vegan cashew cream cheese. My boyfriend went for the spicy egg and cheese bagel. We arrived around 1:30 and were in and out with our to-go order in about 15 minutes, so the wait wasn’t bad. However, I was a bit disappointed that the sesame seed bagels we both got felt a little stale and were tougher to bite into than I’d hoped. The toppings were delicious, but I was expecting the bagels themselves to be fresher—maybe because we came later in the day?

Love Laylas bagels. Go during the week and order online. Small outside space to eat. They have vegan cream cheese and gluten free bagels. I love the one with tomato. My son gets one with egg and adds avocado.

The line on weekends is usually a 35-45min wait, but they are quick once you order.
The bagels looked amazing, but the taste was slightly better than average in my opinion. I prefer New York bagel spots a bit more.

Two stars for the creativity 🙇🏻‍♀️ but the characteristics of the bagel was wanting. I expected a solid crunch from the bagel and the inside to be squishy and muted in flavor but what I got was chewy/tough all around and a bit of flavor from the dough. I prefer it to only give me texture and not flavor as that’s the role for the schmear.

The flavors from the spices were there but it was mainly salty AF. I’m sorry but IMO, this was a one-dimensional bagel that I really wish I could buy my time back and tried somewhere else.

EDIT: I forgot to add that also ordered their matcha latte but it tasted watered down 🤢

Don’t understand the hype of this place. Yes, the bagels are Instagram worthy, but the bagels fall flat; they’re tough to chew through and really ruins the experience of how pretty they are when served open-faced. We thought going here would bring a different experience in the bagels themselves, sadly they’re really basic. Toughest bagels I’ve had and actually Noah’s Bagels taste better, even as just plain. They tasted either over-boiled or over-steamed, not really sure what their process is. Coffee wasn’t anything special, even with regular milk. Other than the food and coffee, the atmosphere was a vibe. Nicely decorated with a usual line out the door. Hard pass.
