What a treat to be able to challenge your taste sensibilities with such an amount of different flavours and textures.
Attentive staff always on hand to clear the clutter and fill the glasses and provide a help on what you are ordering.
This was the one place we expected good food, but the experience was more around how the different ingredients can provide a contrasting taste based on what you decide to use in that mouthful.
You could get three different taste experiences from the one plate.
Not the choice for cheap and cheerful, but for spoiling and feeling special with the associated price.
We had the Scallops and Venison starters followed by the Chicken and Salmon mains. Oh and a few cocktails.

I have lived in Wellington for the past 10 years and this have been the best food experience I had in this town. I only believe that it will be topped by another visit to it.
The hosts made us felt like we were at home and provided us with great service and food, no requests was too much we had everything we asked for and more!
The food was sensational, a treat to to the palate and is always fresh, the menu is seasonal so my pictures may not represent the current menu but it rather representes the experience and quality of it self.
Thanks to the Hippopotamus staff fir helping me arranging my wife’s birthday surprise you guys are awesome.

Went there last night for an Anniversary Dinner with my Partner and was definetly a great experience! Probably the best fine dining that you can find in Wellington.
We had  the degustation with matching wine, gourmet food served by a really competent and qualified staff, Sommelier wine matching with the dishes was next Level.
A great experience, definetly recommended!

I visited Wellington for my 30th birthday and decided to celebrate in the best way by treating myself to a lovely high tea at the Hippopotamus restaurant. I had such a wonderful experience, the atmosphere was incredible along with the view, lovely staff and of course the high tea itself was absolutely delicious!

Had high tea here for my friend's hen's. First time for me and the restaurant is lovely for a special occasion. High tea was good and there was about ten of us in our group. Good location. I'd like to try the à la carte menu next time so watch this space.
