Basilica of Saint Mary Major is one of the major basilicas, famous for "The Salus Populi Romani", a much venerated early icon. Quite ancient and immense, original church is from the V century. Later rebuild in the 1200's and finally in the 1700's. Many frescoes, mosaics, statues inside, like the massive one of King Philip IV of Spain by Gian Lorenzo Bernini

Column of Peace: A Corinthian column decorated with eagles and dragons (I think symbolizing the coat of arms of the Borghese family who commissioned it). At the top is Virgin Mary with a child. I believe the inscription on the front says “From whose womb was born the Prince of true peace”.

This is a nice addition to the piazza just in front of Santa Maria Maggiore. The column is Corinthian in style and topped with a bronze figure of the Virgin Mary with Child. It is the work of Carlo Moderno 1614. There is a fountain here as well that Moderno constructed in 1615. Worth a minute or two to view each before or after entering and enjoying your time within the basilica.
