Came to this shop from reading review and looking at food pictures. I was particularly attracted to the broth of noodles. The battered calamari is quite tasty but the noodles is not for me. Overall hokkien mee tastes quite bland/ lack flavour to me. I like the pork lard topping

Mian Wang is a gem hidden inconspicuously in a nook within Bt Batok. Today I had the opportunity to try their HKM and also their samba chilli clams.
Their style is the wetter type HKM with a robust seafood umami. Surprisingly you can taste wok hei smokiness in their broth which is usually only found in good dry HKM versions.
Also, I prefer their chilli which is spicy and tangy. Pork lard bits are small, crunchy and freshly cooked.
The wait time is 15 min using buzzer system, but by the time I finished my food and ordered second round tabao, the wait time doubled.

Hokkien Mee is 4.5 stars. Quantity is quite small as the serving plate can't seem to hold much. They serve the wetter version of the HKM. Load of crunchy pork lard. You can add other side such as salted egg calamari, fried chicken cutlet, braised pork or lala. 4 stars for add ons.

We had the lala version with calamari, nothing to shout about for the lala but the salted egg calamari is pretty good.

Next time, I will just order the medium size OG for $5.50.

There is no doubt in my mind that Mian Wang 1971 deserves to be in any shortlist of the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore.

The flavourful Hokkien Mee stock is sticky, not wet.  It clings to the noodles.  There is discernable wok hei, and lard is added to give the dish its heavenly aroma.  Ingredients are fresh.  Their sambal chilli is good.

I like hawkers who try to push the envelope and offer creative variants that enhance the overall flavour profile of the basic dish.  In this regard, Mian Wang 1971 doesn't disappoint.  Apart from "normal" Hokkien Mee, they offer different toppings such as Salted Egg Calamari, Braised Pork, Crispy Chicken Cutlet, Seafood Lala, Sambal Belachan Seafood, etc.

"Normal" Hokkien Mee starts at $4.50 a plate (see picture).  The ones that include the various toppings mentioned above are $7 per plate.

The Salted Egg Calamari has been my long time favourite.  It pairs very well with the Hokkien Mee.  To prevent it from being soggy, the Salted Egg Calamari is served separately on a bed of lettuce (see picture).

If I have a complaint, it would be that they served thinly sliced chicken instead of pork in the Hokkien Mee when I ordered from them today (17 March 2024).  Not sure if this is a new innovation, or they were just getting rid of some excess chicken.  Please serve pork and not chicken!

Hidden Hokkien mee gem place.
It's a small coffee shop with limited seating area.

Can pay using CDC voucher.
But their data connection there is poor so have to step away from the counter to load the page.

Had it before during Covid period with Delivery. Finally went down to the shop itself to taste it.

Very good flavours!
The sides are also well done!
