Excellent collection from the archeological finds from Roman Salona and Split are at this museum. Interesting descriptions on the artifacts and very cool open air garden filled with ancient tombs that you can walk right up too and appreciate every detail on these magnificent pieces of history. Descriptions on the garden could’ve been more organized but a must when visiting Split.

One of the most impressive collections I have seen, I am amazed that the collection was still not very organized to me and you could just walk around and touch all the thousands of years old artifacts if you wanted to. For someone who like ancient European history this is a gem. The museum was empty except for us when we visited so it is not a crowded place.

Inside, many artifacts from the nearby necropolis. Stone urns and impressive Roman glass pieces. Inside there is extensive information (also in English). Outside there are many more artifacts. Two big mosaics and some dozen smaller ones (fragments). It is fun to explore this area and find the beautiful details of the sarcophagi and lentils, (but there is little extra information here). There is even part of a small sphinx from 1400 BC. The opening hours claim closure between 14 and 15, but you can stay inside if you are already inside. It is simply that the ticket counter is unstaffed.

Having had a Walking Tour of the Old City in Split appreciated from our guide that a large number of Historic artefacts from the ‘cellars’ under Split were kept at the Archaeological Museum. A ten minute walk from the busy centre, a very pleasant, tranquil setting. Both indoor exhibition of artefacts and outdoor. Good value. Strong recommendation.
