I recently travelled to Aix-en-Provence from Australia and I had always wanted to stay in a beautiful old Château.  I came across Château de Fonscolombe and felt it was the perfect place to retreat.  Upon arriving, the five star treatment started.  I was met by a staff member who had concierge take my bags and park my car for me. I was then taken to a waiting lounge and given fresh juice and a washcloth.  I was shown around the Château and to my room.  I wasn't expecting much in terms of food as a lot of hotels don't always accommodate a vegan diet.  I mentioned it on my booking nonetheless and was so grateful I did.  I arrived in room to find specially made vegan sweets for me along with a welcome note.  I booked dinner in the restaurant not sure what to expect.  The chef very kindly accommodated my dietary restrictions and prepared a beautiful vegan meal for me.  The wine and food was exceptional.  Fresh and inventive.  I also received a light breakfast for the morning that was also fresh and tasty.  The hotel grounds are lovely for a morning walk and it was very peaceful.  I was able to get a morning workout in also in their well equipped gym.  Thank you so much to all the staff at Château de Fonscolombe for still providing a 5 star service and not opting for a basic option for me like others so often have. I would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to come back someday.

This Château is absolutely stunning. The location is very secluded and makes you feel like you are off the grid and at a retreat. Very quiet and also relaxing when you hear nature all day and night. The hotel is great and the rooms are really lovely. But: I am only giving 2 stars for the bad dining experience at the hotel’s bistro. 160€ for a dinner, leaving the restaurant hungry.
I don’t eat meat, which I understand is still a strange habit for the French, but should it really be so strange for the restaurant of a 5 star hotel?
When we got to the bistro for dinner, I asked about vegetarian options. The young and clearly inexperienced waiter didn’t know what to say and stuttered that I could eat a starter and also “there is desert”. Seriously??
As it seemed clear that they weren’t going to make any effort, I went for 2 cold starters, one replacing a main course. I asked for the second starter to be served warm instead of cold, to have at least the resemblance of a dinner. It was a tomato tart so not a weird request to heat it up. This was done only very reluctantly and presented to me as an “exception”. When I shared my feedback leaving the restaurant, we were reminded that we could have gone to the 200€ per person fine dining restaurant next door where they offer a vegetarian option (which we had considered but we weren’t in the mood for a 3h fine dining experience).
I felt very bad about this dinner. We paid 160€ (!!!!) - for this price I expect to not leave a restaurant hungry, even as a vegetarian, and at the minimum to be served by experienced staff. I’ve seen a few 5 star hotels and their restaurants and I’ve never eaten so badly. Please tell me, what is so hard about adding a vegetarian option? Or at least have one in the back hand in case a unicorn like me would like to have dinner? I’d have been happy with an improvised plate of pasta or a salad. It can’t be that hard!
The second night, my husband went to the restaurant alone (it is the only option unless you want to drive) and I had cookies in the hotel room for dinner. I still can’t believe this really happened. We won’t be back.

Absolutely incredible place to stay. Accommodations, staff, food, grounds, amenities, all five stars. I wish I could give them a 4.5 for location, but I have to just ever so slightly ding them because it’s hard to leave the property without a car in order to get to places like Aix and Marseille.

Chateau Fonscolombe, which is part of the Relais & Chateaux hotel group located in Provence. This magical hotel is located in Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, France. It is situated on a wine estate in a spectacular countryside. The chateau is also a historic site dating back to the 1600’s. The rooms, property, pool area, and restaurants as well as the 10 star service are exceptional. You will need and want a car so that you can explore the area. The chateau’s wine is excellent! I recommend a visit to nearby Chateau La Coste for wine tasting, a 15 min drive to Aix-en-Provence, the town of Loumarin, Gordes, and all surrounding areas. A spectacular visit with Chateau de Fonscolombe!
