Cozy restaurant with inventive and delicious dishes. Started the tasting menus with a good rhythm… and this would have been a 5 star review, but unfortunately our main dishes took over 30 minutes to arrive. Lost the rhythm and therefore the momentum and vibe was a bit off after that… but otherwise a special place in Köln!

One of the best restaurants I've ever been to. The quality of the food, the taste ... extremely well balanced in all aspects. The wine pairing exceptionally good and full of positive surprises. The service did an excellent job, friendly, easy, attentive. Highly recommended!

They have nice tableware!
The service is warm and welcoming.
The tasting menu is well developed.
Not all of it was up to my taste. For example, the mullet fish had blood oranges in the garnish that felt out of place, and zucchini were shaped like long pasta which is not easy to eat on a shallow plate.
On the other hand, the pâté in aspic was phenomenal!
Overall, the place is definitely worth checking out, and I would come again in future.

Classical and comprehensible. With this philosophy, Eric Werner was awarded a Michelin ⭐️ shortly after the opening the astrein in Cologne. Apparently, collecting stars is something of a hobby for Eric. He first received a Michelin star in 2011 for the Spatzenhof in Wermelskirchen, making him the youngest Michelin-starred chef in Germany at the time. Together with Eri Arnecke, he earned two stars at the Residence in Essen. This was followed by another Michelin star at the restaurant "Himmel un Äd" in the Hotel Wasserturm in Cologne. With his own restaurant, the astrein, Eric has been traveling in the galaxy of stars for almost 3 years now. In his restaurant he serves dishes that are easy to understand and that every guest is immediately familiar with. The dishes are always seasonally composed, with the aim of infusing harmonious taste experiences with international accents. Apparently, he succeeds in this very well without coming across as pretentious or arrogant. The astrein itself has a very pleasant atmosphere. Haste and extravagance are nowhere to be found here. Eric and his team place the utmost importance on a relaxed interaction with their guests. The 'eat-or-die mentality' simply does not exist in here. Creatively and very professionally, in the case of intolerances or aversions to certain components of a dish, substitutions are made in the kitchen in a playful manner. Here, the guest truly calls the shots. This is not something that can be taken for granted nowadays. The wine list is well-equipped with exciting and outstanding wines. With very fairly calculated prices, a visit is definitely worthwhile!

I have learned that the "astrein" restaurant in Köln (Cologne) - which I visited on a Friday evening in June 2020 - closed its doors for good.

Overall, I found that the performance of the kitchen and service more or less fell short of my very high expectations - especially with regard to the care taken in the aromatic composition of the dishes, the price-performance ratio and, in my view, a flawed price transparency.
