We had the absolute pleasure of dining at this charming local restaurant in Madeira. Every dish felt like it was cooked with love, bringing warmth and comfort to every bite. I’d read reviews and heard good things, though I had reservations already based upon pictures. However, my partner and I thought we’d check it out and were amazed that there was a queue all the way down the stairs and onto the street around 8pm! It must be good, we thought. We came back earlier the following night and unfortunately, were very underwhelmed.

The food was ok. Nothing special, nothing bad. The portion sizes are good and it’s cheap, but frankly, it reminded me of school dinner/cafeteria food. The same basic salad served for each dish, rather bland rice and chips, and the worst glass of wine I’ve had in both Madeira and Lisbon. Service was very quick, but we were told to sit at any small table when we entered, to then be told ‘no’ to two of the three tables that were set up for two? Very odd. You also need to pay at the bar rather than at your table.

Nothing necessarily bad, but underwhelming and I don’t understand all the highly positive reviews. Far better places to eat on the island.

The restaurant is located in a basement and is a bit hard to spot from the street, but we found it thanks to positive reviews and decided to go straight there. The interior is traditional, and the staff is incredibly friendly, kind, and helpful (they assisted us with our choice). The portions are huge and absolutely delicious. Highly recommended if you want to try something traditional.

Since it's in a basement, the only downside is that you can smell the cooking, which perhaps adds a bit of extra “touch”.

My favourite restaurant in Funchal! We visited here for 3 nights in a row.. what a lovely family-run restaurant. We came without reservations, and they quickly accommodated us. It gets quite busy, but the service is really fast and efficient. The staff are welcoming and accommodating. The serving portions are massive, and its not overpriced either.. The mains come with side dishes(rice,steamed potatoes and vegetable.)I especially loved the shrimps, and the caramel pudding dessert. I’ll definitely visit again when we come back to Funchal..
