Our first visit to Madeira for some Winter sun and were delighted with our choice of hotel. From arriving to departing, we were very impressed with every single member of staff we encountered.
The hotel is located on the edge of Funchal but situated on the picturesque Lido area/promenade.  There is a bus stop located just up from the hotel and buses 1 and 2 (yellow bus) run frequently to and from the centre of Funchal. The fare is €1.90 each way (cash only, but gives change).

Our bedroom was serviced daily to an excellent standard.

We met many other guests at the hotel who have been coming to stay at this hotel for many years.
We can fully understand why and will be returning ourselves.

A modern and well managed hotel about a 20 minute brisk walk from the harbour. We had a side facing room for our cheaper package over Christmas and the New Year. However, the balconies obliquely face the sea and we had morning sun through to early afternoon so quite happy with that. Seems to be All Inclusive only - no tills in sight and have whatever you want whenever you want.  The staff have all been friendly and accommodating and work so hard.  Would we come here again?  YES.

Fourth time at this fab hotel. Fabulous food and drinks. Spotlessly clean and staff are extremely cheerful and helpful. Went to the Italian themed restaurant this time. The food was superb and authentic (and we've eaten in Venice, Florence and Sorrento). Just out of the rear gate is the promenade with many nearby bars and restaurants if you fancy a change. So good we've booked again for April/May '25. Well done!

A Complete Disappointment

I don't even know where to begin with this review, but one thing is certain—this is not a 5-star hotel by any standard.

Booking Experience
Even before my arrival, my experience with the hotel was frustrating. The official website offered a 7-night stay for €1927, but I found the same deal on Agoda for €1437—€490 less! I contacted the hotel, explained that I preferred booking directly with them, and asked if they could match the price. They firmly refused.

Arrival and Room Conditions
Upon arrival, they did take our luggage, which was appreciated, but the problems started immediately afterward. The revolving door at the entrance was outdated and not automatic, making it uncomfortable and unwelcoming.

The room was beyond disappointing. It wasn’t just outdated—it was filthy. Beneath the bed, there was a disgusting amount of dirt and dust, clearly showing it hadn’t been cleaned. The bathroom felt unsanitary, and the water didn’t drain properly while I was showering. This is not what I expect from a so-called luxury hotel.

To make matters worse, the minibar was nearly empty, with only three soft drinks, and they didn’t even provide bottled water. Instead, we were given two empty plastic bottles and told to fill them ourselves in the lobby. The water dispenser didn’t even match the bottle size, causing water to spill everywhere each time. If they want guests to use refillable bottles, they should at least ensure it’s convenient and accessible on every floor.

Pool and Safety Concerns
The pool area was another letdown. After the rain stopped, the floors around the pool were dangerously slippery, and no one bothered to clean them. This created a serious safety hazard, showing a complete disregard for guest welfare.

Food Poisoning Incident and Rude Receptionist
The worst part of my stay was the food poisoning I got after eating breakfast at the hotel. It was the only meal I had that day, and within hours, I was vomiting and feeling extremely nauseous. When I went to the front desk to report it, the receptionist, Carla, was unbelievably rude and dismissive. Her response was, “You’re the only one who has complained. Do you have proof from a doctor that it was food poisoning?”

I explained that I hadn’t eaten anything else and was terribly ill. Instead of showing empathy or offering assistance, she completely dismissed my concerns. To later discover that other guests experienced similar issues, based on reviews I read, made Carla’s behavior even more infuriating. The hotel took no responsibility and didn’t even try to help—their attitude was shocking and utterly unprofessional.

Poor Amenities and Services

Elevators: Only one elevator was functioning during our stay, and it remained unfixed the entire time. The long waits became a daily frustration.

Iron: When we requested an iron, it was delivered broken and burnt, and we were only allowed to use it for an hour.

Wi-Fi: The internet connection was a disaster—constantly disconnecting and almost unusable.

Entertainment: The evening entertainment was so loud it was impossible to have a conversation without shouting. It wasn’t enjoyable; it was painful.

General Neglect and Disorganization
The hotel was chaotic and poorly managed. There was no clear schedule for activities or events. Instead of providing an itinerary or even a simple brochure, they expected guests to check random screens around the hotel, making it easy to miss things.

Final Thoughts
This was, without a doubt, one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. From dirty rooms to unsafe conditions, awful service, and the complete lack of accountability from the staff (especially Carla at reception), I cannot emphasize enough how disappointing this stay was.

If this is what Enotel Lido considers 5-star hospitality, they seriously need to reevaluate their standards.

The only positive aspect I can mention is the location.

We had an 'inclusive' package, so took advantage of the food and drink. Meals were buffet - plenty of choice and delicious. No tea / coffee in room but you can ask for a kettle. Staff friendly and helpful.
