I hadn't booked tickets online and I was waiting at the queue for the tickets office for 2 hours on a Tuesday. Even the people with tickets were waiting on a queue, smaller though. Be prepared to wait! Maybe in bad weather too. The museum is packed with people and the map of the exhibitions in the palace is chaotic. The palace is chaotic. But it's beautiful and it has a great variety of things, from different times and different cultures/civilizations. You should definitely visit when in Saint Petersburg, but be prepared to wait in queue for a long time. Definitely arrive 30 minutes earlier when you have booked tickets.

Visited this museum with friends, and it was an incredible experience! We booked our tickets online, which made entry smooth and hassle-free. The museum is a must-visit when in St. Petersburg, with its stunning architecture and vast collection of art and history. Don't miss it!

Another 6-star review if possible. I was drawn to St Petersburg because of the Winter Palace. The nominally 4th largest museum of the world, this is not to be missed anyway, they have ticketing machine outside in the garden that could save a lot of language problem for us tourists.
The State Hermitage Museum has millions of artefacts, we spent 6 hours and browsed through most of the rooms and galleries. I measured that it was over 22 kilometres in walking distance. I was glad that I could do it while I still have the health and mobility. The eye opening knowledge we got is just priceless.
There will not be the same exhibits in many rooms for every visit, as they change them from time to time.
I would highly recommend any one to go no matter you love history or not, because the Hermitage has everything that would suit your interests. Daily artefacts, arts, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, photos, you just name it. We found it so awesome that the building itself was a piece of art at the age of 300 years. Just this is already older than most modern cities in many parts of the world.
St Petersburg itself is already an art piece, building from scratch on a swampy land ! Come and see for your self, I couldn't think of other advice that is more practical, hah.

Just fabulous. It is one of the largest and most prestigious museums in the world and dates back to 1764 when it was founded by Empress Catherine the Great. Given that it houses over three million items, including masterpieces of Western European art, Oriental treasures, and much more you need a lot of time to explore. In fact someone said it is so big that you would need eleven years to view each exhibit on display for just one minute. We didn't have that much time but still nearly a full day was enought.

A magnificent museum, one of the biggest I've ever visited. There are several interesting things to see. A downside is that many things are labeled only in Russian or have only Russian description. The wait time is slightly long so better to purchase the tickets online. Overall a great place to visit, highly recommend!
