Great dining experience at Villa Retiro while we were touring the nearby Matarraña region. All dishes had very original presentations and also delivered on flavour and cooking point. I very much appreciated their focus on featuring local ingredients and their cuisine being genuinely anchored in the Ebro Delta, especially in a world where most Michelin star restaurants serve too similar dishes with same “Asian ingredients” just because it’s trendy. Service was attentive although there were clear differences in the knowledge and experience amongst the crew. The setting is also very spacious and charming with a very original decor and part of a building with unique features such as a centenary ficus tree and a very deep and old well inside.

When you get seated for a Michelin rated restaurant you have certain expectations, so given that, I was a little underwhelmed, but overall it was an excellent dining experience.
Here is why only three stars: the food, although very good, used a lot of heavy sauces and a lot of the fish had a fishy taste. I suppose they were trying to bring out the “flavor” of the fish, but it was a little off putting. The sauce tasted all very similar, nothing had the fireworks of a Michelin rated restaurant. The soups were amazing! The bread and the desserts were excellent. The service was very attentive but a few things I noticed: The service was either rushed or very slow. They didn’t treat the tables individually, they wanted to stack the tables together, leaving some tables food out in the open (and getting cold) when they presented the other table’s courses. In my opinion I want to feel like the only table in dining room at a Michelin level and you definitely noticed how sometimes you got served first or last. The presentation, although very elaborate and impressive, was a little bit clumsy and felt a little bit too big for the waiters to manage the carts. Overall, the experience was good, not excellent. Had I gone to this dinner without Michelin star expectations, I would have rated it higher, but overall the Michelin star deserves a little criticism when it doesn’t live up to the expectation of that.

Cheap and very regular vine and only 2 good tasting dishes. The worst Michelin we ever visited. Dinner price over 200€ per person.

The tasting menu was disappointing and over complicated with theatrical displays that must be impossible to clean. We were a group of 6 who enjoyed the hotel but could not say the same about the food. Three of the group ate the pigeon and had food poisoning. The response from the restaurant was disappointing and dismissive.

The food was great, the restaurant itself was exquisite ,the service was amazing They were so nice and one of the servers was knowledgeable about how to handle toddler boredom and tantrums.
