Is this place kind of overrated? Probably. Is it worth a long queue if there is one? No. Is it a bad restaurant? Also no. Food was okay, two standouts were the agnolotti and surprisingly the mortadella e farine. The vodka pasta was so underwhelming, lacked flavor and was way too al dente to a point where it was really gummy-esque… chicoria drenched in so much oil that we left it. They’re way too heavy on the oil in general, even tho it’s a high quality one… pear salad started was nice and refreshing. Focaccia was nice texture wise but again drenched in oil and cold - not sure why I expected it to be nice and warm. The chocolate mousse dessert wasn’t terrible, but I wouldn’t really order it again. The novelty and hype around it seems a bit manufactured, but great from a marketing perspective (off menu). Want to point out that all staff were sooo lovely and personable. Not always the case in a place as busy as this. I feel like canteen has nailed the chic / cool Notting hill “understated” upper class vibe and I’d much rather come here for a glass of wine at the counter watching the world go by with a good friend than visit again purely for the food.

My friends and I finally visit the CANTEEN. We had a good start with only having a short wait in the queue before it opens, and then it starts going wrong. First of all, we are very confused by the serving order since we got the tomato anchovy pizza as our first dish, but we also ordered focaccia and the mozzarella starter. Also, the pizza was too salty to enjoy. Secondly, the service could be improved as one of the waitress took away our plate twice too early without asking even with food still in the plate. It feels like we are pushed to eat faster so that they could have more turnovers. Lastly, the dish gets cold very easily even we didn’t spend much time taking photos. However, there are also some highlights: the mozzarella starter, mackerel main and the pistachio ice cream all taste amazing. Overall I would recommend going if there is no need to queue.

We arrived for Sunday dinner and there was a stale atmosphere in the air. We had the focaccia which was a bit dry. The oxtail rigatoni was very tasty but arrived cold, mushroom pizza was very good but expensive for what it was. Chocolate mousse was good but not different from what I make at home. The saving grace was our waiter who was sweet and attentive enough. With a little bit more effort and a smile from staff I think this place would have got at least a 4/5 rating but it was hard to ignore how distasteful the general vibe was.

Canteen, if i’m being honest, was very underwhelming. I am local to the area and have been waiting to visit canteen for a while now. We were so excited when we got there, but left disappointed and with un eaten food on our plates. We had the mozzarella and tomatoes to start. The mozzarella was delicious and the only thing that I enjoyed. The tomatoes were way too sweet and an odd mix of cooked and not. We waited another 20 minutes for the mains to arrive and the starter plate had still not been taken off our table (it stayed there until we left the restaurant). When the mains did arrive I was very hungry and excited to try the pasta. We got the Beef Ragu and the Artichoke Pappardelle. The second I had my first bite of the beef ragu i was disappointed. The ragu was chalky and bland and I was left unable to eat much of it. My partners pasta was nice and had a good flavour but some of the artichokes were inedible. My partner said there was a couple times where she felt there were spikes in her throat. We did not finish any of the dishes served to us. The service was also not great at all. For the price we paid for bad pasta that we could make at home better, you would at least expect to have efficient service and respect. A lot of the workers were just walking around aimlessly when they clearly have plates and tables to clear. I’m really sorry but everything about our experience was pretty bad. I would hope to try again at another time as it could have been a bad day in the kitchen.

Luckily we managed to get table at first round! I think they've changed the menu lately, thats why i couldn't have some of my bucket-lists pasta. Focaccia, panna cotta, and chocolate mousse were really good!! Services were great as well!! However, the pastas were way too simple and didnt meet my expectation. Especially the sea bass carpaccio which was extremely salty.
