Great little space with all kinds of inspiring performances and events. I recommend coming as often as possible. You'll be met with kind friendly staff and a great night!

Incredible, safe space where EVERYONE is welcome. Buddies has never ever made me or any of my friends feel unsafe, and anyone who says otherwise has never been in the space and is just trying to be hateful.

There is no space for any kind of hate at Buddies.

I absolutely LOVE buddies! It’s genuinely my favourite queer space in the city. They have an incredible variety in their performances, and the events hosted at Tallulah’s Cabaret (a smaller sub-venue within buddies) are unmatched. I love that buddies is vocal about their support for marginalized communities— they put their money where their mouth is in uplifting diverse voices.

Buddies (and Tallulah's - shout out!) has been a place that I have had the pleasure of being a patron at, performing at, and working at for a decade now. It is a space that feels safe, and welcoming. The people there are kind, the drinks are cheap, and the programming always includes something for everyone. Thank you for working so hard to create community and connection in the Village and in the Toronto arts scene.

Great space and great events. Love the feeling of community and how everyone including staff are welcoming. Went for my first time for New Year’s Eve and had an ok time. The performances were good but music was lacklustre for dancing.  Coat check could have been more efficient.

I review historical markers and here's a cool one though it also includes the nearby structure. The marker is in good condition (as is the building) and includes some pictures from their performances. It reads: "Buddies in Bad Times is the largest and longest-running queer theatre company in North America. "Founded by Sky Gilbert, Jerry Ciccoritti, and Matt Walsh, it staged its first play, Angels in Underwear (1979), in a former brewery on Queen Street East. Early theatrical successes included Gilbert's plays Lana Turner Has Collapsed! (1980), the controversial Drag Queens on Trial (1985), and Sonny Mills' Dyke City series (1994-1998). "At first without a permanent home, Buddies staged its plays in many locations. In 1991, it moved to 142 George Street, which was home to the theatre's infamous alternative events, including its provacative dungeon nights and its 1993 Femme Ejaculation Pyjama Party workshop. Despite attempts to have its government funding revoked on moral grounds, Buddies moved to this building in 1994. "Buddies in Bad Times has won multiple Dora Mavor Moore Awards, Lieutenant Governor's Awards for the Arts, and an Michael Lynch Award for Queer History. Today is is an international leader in the development of queer voices and stories for the stage." [Review 10947 overall, 719 of 2019.]

This is a good venue for events as it's a large space when it's fully opened up. In most situations it's only the main area that's used so it does feel a bit cramped. They also still require the vaccine passport so make sure to have that available before you arrive, otherwise you'll end up being turned away. Masks are also required in certain areas of the venue.

Never knew about this theatre. Well located downtown with several eateries close by. Accessible by transit but we drove and found a parking lot across the street. Once you enter, the coat check and washrooms are down a set of stairs. There is a bar and small stage/theatre to the left of the entrance. Then you cut across a "bridge" that takes you to another stage/theatre set up with folding chairs. We came to watch the Sheridan College pop critiques and it was a great venue for these. The students got to perform in front of an audience....many seated and many standing and cheering/dancing in front of the stage. The venue was clean and decent enough for a concert hall. Washrooms were kind of small and the water was freezing cold for handwashing. Purchasing tickets online and via phone was convenient and easy, but there are service fees on top of ticket price. Overall I like this place.

Tonight Gord and I saw "Freda and Jem's Best of the Week" at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. The set was very minimalist ... just a raised platform which becomes a bed, a table, etc. It was a good story and the actors did a excellent job. It was funny in parts yet sad in others. The actors were believable in showing the pain when a family breaks up. It bounced back and forth from today to the past in flashbacks and it was quite easy to determine where they were. I'd recommend this play and this theatre.

In the last month, I have been to Buddies twice. Once for the Rhubarb Festival and again last night for a burlesque performance. I am constantly impressed by the sheer talent and diverse performances that the bookers bring through the walls of Buddies. Space itself is located right downtown, about one block away from the College subway station. Depending on the show, you can pay at the door via cash or credit, which is super helpful. Most of the space is wheelchair accessible, with a ramp leading to the doors and into each of the two rooms in the theatre. I didn't note an elevator going down to the second floor where the bathrooms are, so I'm not entirely sure this place is fully accessible. Good thing to keep in mind or check in on before visiting, should you need it. Besides that, really love this space for being open and inclusive. Can't wait to see what else they'll be hosting in the next few months.

BIG fan of Buddies for the dancing aspect... I have not been to a show here, but I'd like to go (any takers? haha). Buddies usually just keeps one room open for dancing, but on really crowded nights, they will open their second room. Somehow, even when the space is tripled, it's still packed and sweaty--spelling out a good (but post-shower-necessary) time. Of course, you will find mostly gay guys here, but there is a sprinkling of girls thrown into the mix. Drinks are reasonably priced and the bar is efficient. The line outside is also pretty fast. It's the little things like these that add up to a great experience. Little things like how you get stamped with PERVERT upon being granted access (careful to remember to wash that off before work the next morning...). Best tip I can give is to dress casually and, if in doubt, go with less. You will warm up quick with all the bodies and the alcohol. And do not wear any shoes that you care about. They will get blackened. Luckily, the black will come out of canvas shoes quite easily. It has become part of my morning-after routine to scrub my shoes down with a toothbrush and some dishsoap.

Having been to a gay bar only once before I was looking forward to partying with a good friend on his birthday at Buddies In Bad Times. Having never been here before, I was shocked when I discovered that it was not a full time night club but a performing arts theatre most of the time. The night started out pretty slow (and we got there at 11:30), but come around 11:50 (10 minutes before the cover charge goes up) the place went from 0 to 100 in seconds! The music was pumping and the crowd was awesome. Great group of people having a blast. The booze selection was fairly basic, beers and basic bar rail - what you'd expect from a regular club. And while the staff were awesome at taking care of the crowds pretty well with only 2 bars and 3 bartenders the line-ups to get a drink were long. Those minor notes aside, the music was fantastic and the drag performances were awesome (it was my first time seeing one). I thought a performance like that in the midst of the evening would kill the vibe... not at all, each time a performer did their thing it seemed to take the party to another level! Great party and definitely a place I'd come back to!

LOVEEEE THIS PLACE! July 31st, I went here for my friends birthday and she had just move downtown so what better way to try the local gay bar up a few streets. WOW. I had the most amazing time here, the crowd doesn't start picking up until 11...and it gets PACKED. Majority is European ,tanned boys. The music is awesomeness the bar tender (Patricia) is the sweetest EVER!. if you haven't been here and love the gay scene, definitely check it out... I guarantee a good time!!... The boys are soo sooooo lovely. At one point i was dancing and i was wearing my 5inch Guess peep toe stiletto's and i accidentally slipped one foot out. a pair of the loveliest boys treated me like a queen, One bent down to put my shoe on for me while another held my hand. There was no pushing, no perversion (well.. ), no rude snobs....it was just love all the way around!! The bathrooms are underground, but beware the stairs going down are kinda scary and wide. The ATM there is shady looking too, but all in all a really friendly place. xoxo M.
