This is our third time staying at the resort.  The location is nothing but perfect as you can stand the resort and feel like you’re away from everything or step out the front gate and a few steps from fifth Avenue with all the restaurants and shops.  One of our favorite things is the incredible service that we received from Manuel at the breakfast buffet, who always knew our exact order and was super attentive, to Ishmael at the bar by the pool near the Los Alos restaurant, they go above and beyond.

The rooms are rustic - not a ton of amenities and functional for the most part.  We stayed in room 9 which was an ocean front bungalow on the north side of the property.  The location and views are spectacular.  However, we struggled to get adequate water pressure for showers and the water was like warm at best.

All in all the incredible staff and location make this a wonderful spot in downtown Playa.

We went for a friend’s wedding, the location was perfect. The staff were super friendly and helpful. Both Check-in and check-out took at least 20 minutes so we were late meeting our driver when we left. The buffet brekkie & dinner had good variety, but was bored of the food by day 3. Drinks are cheap at the market next door, best to get some for your room. Our room was decent enough but didn’t think it was a good value for money personally. Enjoyed our time as we were surrounded by friends, but wouldn’t come back

We were originally scheduled to go in November of 2024, but there was a tropical storm that forced us to cancel. There was so much damage to the resort and reports of water getting into the rooms of the beachfront locations. BUT, the resort refused to reimburse us our money. We begged, showed them all of the notifications and warnings we received about the weather, and they still wouldn't reimburse us. We ended up coming in January despite all of this. The property is in a beautiful location, and the staff is nice and friendly. But the rooms were run down, there was obvious damage to some of them. (Havana 4 had caution tape all the way around it even though that's where some of our group was staying), the outdoor space was dated and damaged, probably from the storms that they wouldn't reimburse us for. The management seems poor and unhelpful. It's also on a public beach, so if you are staying ocean front, be ready for noise.

I guess it's all about what you're looking for. If you want to be in the heart of downtown Playa del Carmen, then this is a great location. I was willing to pay the extremely high price per night because I wanted a beach front property with a direct view of the ocean. I thought there would be more beach. Instead, the waves pretty much wash up onto the porch/deck. Because of this, people are right outside of the deck, walking by and giving zero privacy whatsoever. Also, the middle of the resort is split by the public beach access area. So, loads of people just camping out, drumming, making noise all night long right outside.

My recommendation if you decide to stay here is to book a second floor room with an ocean view. That way you get some privacy and maybe some peace and quiet.

The smell was the absolute worst for me. It was difficult to go to sleep with that smell and it also woke me up in the night, it was so strong and so bad. It was a combination smell of sulfur and sewage.

All that being said, the staff were fantastic, the service was great, they do have lots of security guards to try to keep safe from all wandering people. The resort itself is so cute and other-worldy. Too bad about the proximity to the public beach, the lack of a real beach area, and the obnoxious smell.

The food was ok. It was fine. Some things we ate were delicious, others were a bit of a miss. The drinks were fantastic.

In the end, I feel like the price for what you get just doesn't seem worth it.

We came back from a week at the Mahekal Beach Resort which was one of the best all inclusive beach vacations we have taken.  We will definitely go back in 2025.
The only way I can describe the entire feeling is that they don't offer customer service they off customer care. Every person on the property is genuinely attentive.  From the reception to the Concierge to the bar and restaurant servers to the maid service are exemplary in their service and kindness.
The pools and loungers are clean and welcoming, the room is spotless, the food  and drinks were delicious and offered  a variety, the proximity of the resort to the ocean and 5th avenue is fun. Once you enter the resort, you don't hear the noise from the streets, but you can enjoy the entertainment outside the resort.
We picked this resort as it was a boutique resort, no entertainment, just complete peacefulness.  The resort envelopes you into a calm and tranquil vacation, just what we were looking for.
We would like to mention a few staff members, but we still feel that all the staff require a huge thank you, as they were amazing and kind.  Eduardo was so welcoming since the first evening we had dinner, to every dinner after that.  He was so attentive and genuine, we hope to see him again when we return. Salvador was so fun and energetic at the bar. And both of the concierges, Josee and Horacio were so supportive in arranging our transportation to the airport.  As I mentioned there are too many to name, but they all were exemplary in their service skills.
We wanted to thank the staff at the Mahekal for a wonderful vacation.  Thank you to all of you.
