Mabel’s has earned its way at the very top of our favorite San Diego restaurants. Spanish influenced seafood focused, with an outstanding and distinctive cocktail program, Mabel’s consistently fires on all cylinders: outstanding craftsmanship from the kitchen, creative and ever changing menus but that also maintain continuity; high craft cocktails that are tastefully innovative without extremist novelty; one of the most consistently professional and hospitable staffs in SD; and the perfect vibe, with good music choices at just the right level to keep the party going for still inviting for conversation. Mabel’s deliberate whole package and we love it!

We had a reservation and were seated a bit early at the bar when we arrived. It was fun to watch the kitchen work! The space was a bit cramped and the person next to me seemed unaware I had sat down, but otherwise it was an amazing atmosphere.

Service was prompt, informative, and friendly. We had quick water refills and the food came out in regular intervals.

The food was spectacular. Before visiting, we had decided we’d be getting the tasting menu which is the best way to go for two people. I left very satisfied and came in very hungry! We don’t drink, but the cocktail menu looked inspired and well-curated.

The tasting menu is a four-course meal. It begins with mussels escabeche, fluffy slices of grilled bread, aioli, swordfish dip (which I could have eaten a bowl of), quality olives, and dates.

We then got a salad with a bright green dressing and a pistachio-furikake blend on top, served with crudo. Both were packed with flavor. It was a highlight of the meal for me.

The main course included potatoes and seafood served with grilled broccolini which was filling and hearty. Both had the most indulgent creamy sauces and it was an easy plate to savor. You can’t skip the potatoes.

We finished with the Basque cheesecake which we were served two slices of.

It was great value for both the food and the experience.

Came here for the oyster special without realizing they focus on Spanish staples. Having just spent a lot of time in Spain, we were seriously impressed and will return soon. Menu is just awesome, doesn’t seem to be a weak item anywhere. Wine list is stellar and the other Spanish booze options are very unique for not just San Diego but the entire country; seeing Sidra and Vermut and Sherry available was a fantastic surprise. Staff was lovely and really knew the menu. The entire experience really was special, must be one of the most underrated restaurants in the city (it was packed but hopefully it stays a secret for those who know good food/drink). Bravo!

The food was really good! We had a reservation but still ended up at the back bar, which was a little disappointing. Had I known, I would have requested standard seating when I was reserving. The service was very kind. I will mention for a seafood restaurant you would expect a little more experience on the oyster shucking. We watched as the staff in front of us attempted to shuck the oysters we ordered and then we did find small pieces of shell in our oysters when we received them due to the inexperience of shucking. Ultimately though it is a very nice place with very enjoyable food.

Loved everything about Mabel’s. To get started, we ordered the Spanish tortilla and the olive oil drizzled on top made it taste even better.
Also ordered a couple of drinks, both delicious.
As a main dish, we had the fish au poivre and the tuna, both really flavorful. You gotta order the Basque cheesecake!
Service was very kind.
