Not Worth the Hype for a Special Occasion

For my 30th birthday, my boyfriend and I wanted to celebrate with a nice steak dinner. While staying in Morro Bay, we decided to drive to Ox and Anchor after seeing their menu online, which looked promising. Sadly, the experience was disappointing from start to finish.

We arrived for our 5:30 PM reservation and paid for parking across the street. They initially tried to seat us at a tiny table that barely had space for two plates. My boyfriend asked if we could move, and although they did accommodate us, it felt like they were reluctant to do so.

We started with drinks, which were average, and bread that wasn’t served warm. The butter was topped with an overwhelming amount of salt, making it unpleasant. For an appetizer, we ordered the Ox + Anchor Eggrolls, but they weren’t good either. The filling had large chunks of slimy chicken, both dark and white meat, and not enough cheese. Since I don’t like dark meat, the texture and flavor were unappealing. The dipping sauce helped but couldn’t save the dish.

For entrees, I chose the Filet Mignon, and my boyfriend had the American Wagyu Flat Iron Steak. Unfortunately, both were completely under seasoned—neither had any salt or flavor. My filet wasn’t tender, and the flat iron steak was just as underwhelming.

The sides were no better. The “loaded baked potato” wasn’t nicely baked; instead, it was sliced with an unappetizing cream underneath. It lacked seasoning and tasted bland. The roasted asparagus was the only thing we enjoyed somewhat, but it was overly salted.

We didn’t finish our meals and left most of the food behind since we didn’t think it was worth taking with us.

At the end of the meal, our server, who was friendly and acknowledged my birthday, offered a complimentary dessert. I picked a chocolate dessert with ice cream and something involving Kit Kat, but it was just as disappointing. The chocolate lacked flavor, and the ice cream was forgettable.

Overall, this dinner felt like a waste of time and money. For a steakhouse at this price point, I expected much better. I wouldn’t recommend Ox and Anchor, especially for a special occasion.

Michelin guide 2024 set us up for disappointment. While the service was superb, the wait staff were super attentive, that was the highlight. Nothing was memorable really. We celebrated our anniversary here, we’re slo locals so we’ve been to most restaurants around here. The crème brûlée was good but we were not blown away.

This place is amazing!! Came with 6 of my girlfriends and we had the best time. All of the food + drinks were so good (get the Pinot Noir!!) and our waiter Bryan made the whole experience even better. Even if the food wasn’t good I’d probably go back just to hangout with him lol.
But the food was amazing, the desserts, literally everything. They bring you a warm towel with almond extract oil at the end!! Best night ever, GO HERE

My husband and I tried Ox + Anchor a few months ago and we LOVED it.
We definitely had to come back again to celebrate our anniversary.
The service, food, and atmosphere is phenomenal.
I totally recommend the Bone marrow tater tots, the Yukon potato purée, Mac and cheese, flat iron steak, the rosemary chicken and the king salmon. EVERYTHING is so good.

Back in my hometown to celebrate my birthday. A bit of a splurge but totally worth it.
Started with the grilled artichokes, excellent flavor, the smokey flavor with herbs was delectable. No dipping sauce needed!
The filet was phenomenal, medium rare, perfect temperature. Pink all the way through, no blue, texture like velvet. So perfect. Sorry no pictures I was too absorbed my the eating 🥩
I asked for a non alcoholic, non soda option and was presented with a fresh squeezed lemonade with muddled berries 🥰
Wonderful experience.
