This place is a solid 5-star experience from start to finish. Everything exceeded our expectations. The service was top-notch, with everyone from the host to the servers being friendly and attentive. Went for an anniversary dinner and the spot was nice, quaint without feeling crowded, perfect for a casual dinner. I had the crab fritters for an appetizer, pork chop for my entrée, and the rum cake with banana ice cream for dessert and each item was so tasty! The portions were generous but not overbearing where you left feeling stuffed. The staff were very attentive and kind.

Exciting menu. Definitely worth checking out.

Wife and I had a reservation, and we showed up early, but the host wasn’t welcoming at all... Seemed bothered to invite another guest. We also didn’t get the seating we reserved, but that wasn’t important. Details like this just come into play when there’s a mandatory gratuity fee. The waitress, on the other hand, was very amicable and attentive.

The cassava fritters were a fun and addicting appetizer. Very creamy and cheesy internally with a mildly crispy outer layer.

The crab dumplings were underwhelming as a medium plate — the seasoning of the crab was not cohesive at all with its soup. The crab was giving Starkist, while the soup was giving Maruchan ramen with an extra flavor packet. Low quantity and quality made the $29 price appalling.

The seafood black rice was an exciting dish for me. Very refreshing lemon undertones on the tender mussels and an enjoyable taste and texture of rice. Their shrimp is spectacular. It truly does serve two. You will be full after this.

Very unique dessert options. The pumpkin cassava pone was very dense and rich. The passion fruit sago mousse was refreshing and light, but some may find it a little too tart. Both very good options.

They make very efficient use of the space available, and it never felt crowded despite it being a busy looking night. The place was clean and nicely decorated. I’d recommend it to others and would come back.

I've been waiting to hit up St. James since first hearing about it, and tonight was the night I made it happen.  Went with a couple friends, and here's the good, the bad and the ugly:

The good: service was great; staff was friendly and inviting; the vibe was awesome; the drinks were satisfactory (nothing amazing); the macaroni pie was scrumptious; and the garlic ribs were delicious (without the unnecessary sauce to accompany them).

The bad and ugly: the "jerk wings" had zero semblance of jerk seasoning on them, and for some unknown reason, they were served with sauce that seemed based in mayonnaise (not really sure but it gave aioli); the oxtail and the brisket were way too fatty - gave up eating both.

All of that, and salt on the wound: a bill for almost $230.  Absurd.

I really wanted to love this place and might come back just for that mac and to vibe with the awesome staff.  But otherwise, my search for quality Caribbean food in DC continues...

Still water is $8 for those who don't know.

Got the seafood platter: wish the mussels were cooked more (Felt raw. Seems like it was lightly steamed). Otherwise, LOVED the shrimp.

Got the Crab Dumplings: needs more flavor. Found it to be mid & forgettable. No need to waste money.

Desserts: You cannot go wrong!!! Get em!!!
