Absolutely amazing. We happen to be in DC in January and decided to visit all of the monuments. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to this monument until the end of the day. So the monument was closed by the time we got there. But we were still able to walk around it and I got some great pictures. It was very windy and very cold.

Surprisingly never been able to make this place because every time friends come to town, the early reservation period has passed and tickets are TOUGH to get here (probably second to White House tours). For the 24-hour prior ticket release, those always disappear in like 15 seconds....worse than getting tickets for Taylor Swift or Bruce Springsteen.  So we decided to go early on the day after Christmas and get in line.....and scored 9AM tickets.  By 8:55AM, all the tickets for the day were gone.   We got in line, were screened by security, rode a 30 second elevator ride to the top, and spent about 15 minutes walking the whole circle of the views at the top (there is no time limit), rode the elevator down....and were done by 9:30AM.  All the park staff were very friendly and everything went smooth (do pay attention to the rules about no lighters and clippers and tweezers and such!).  After trying many times over the years, do I think it was worth it? It is cool to think of having been up there but for the effort, it doesn't have an equivalent payoff.  No great parking options super close by so if you are getting in line for same day tickets, plan on dropping someone off to get in line before going to park.  That said, you can get 65% of the Washington Monument view from the Old Post Office Tower (it isn't as tall) and no need to get tickets and likely no wait. So don't stress if you aren't able to go up here -  just come walk around and touch the monument and get your photos and take the elevator at Old Post Office.  Overall we had a great visit and it is wonderful that they let you to go to the top for free.

We were able to get tickets to go into the monument. It's pretty awesome to be able to stand in a structure like that built so long ago. If you are in the capital and haven't had a chance, highly recommend the trip. I don't see myself going again by myself. But can see myself going with people who haven't gone before. Make sure to reserve a ticket. It's a whooping $1 to get in. Definitely a tourist attraction worth visiting.

Must see, no wait to come close but to go inside, tickets needed.

Update waited over an hour in line for tickets. It was a bit cold and inconvenient but still grateful to pay homage to our great nation. Tickets are free if lucky enough to get one before “sold out”. I believe paid tours are available as well. Probably worth looking into if time if not an option. The entire time took from waiting to end of tour about two and a half hours. Arrived before 8am, ticket window opened at 9. Ticket appointment was at 930am, available slot is of your choosing depending on availability.  Came down from the obelisk by 1030. Very simple monument but wonderful history.
