Mellow Mushroom was my favorite pizza place for 20+ years, but my recent experiences with them suggest that the chain is in decline. At the Vinings location, my pizza was served with slimy "grilled" chicken that reminded me of summer camp food. A friend and I visited the Decatur location around 7pm on Saturday night and business was unexpectedly dead--it was a little eerie. I soon came to understand why so few people were there.

I ordered a small cheeseless pizza with spinach, mushrooms, and ground beef. My friend ordered a small house special. About 20 minutes after we ordered, the server brought out my pizza and informed us that the kitchen staff hadn't yet started on my friend's pizza (the server was not sure why and was apologetic).

My pizza had about 1/2 the toppings that it would normally have, all squished together in the center of the pie. I asked if they could add some more sauce and the server took it back to the kitchen. When the pizza came back, it had about 3 additional small squirts of sauce, still leaving generous space between where the toppings ended and the crust began (see picture). I asked the server why they didn't fill in the empty space, she said she'd watched them squirt it on and asked them to add more. She didn't know why they were being so stingy with it but she brought me a ramekin of sauce to make up for it.

Thankfully, my friend's pizza appeared normal save some very wet tomatoes. Also, our salads were great, albeit too large for the tiny bowls they were served in (the server said they didn't have any larger bowls).

After both meals (slimy chicken and sparse toppings), I filled out MM's feedback form, letting them know of the disappointing experiences. Both times I received this exact email:

The vagueness indicates to me that no one actually looked at my feedback. In the past, MM offered a $5 off coupon for feedback, but now it's just this sorry boilerplate message.

I'm sad to see MM going down the drain like so many other businesses that are focused on cutting corners to line the pockets of those on top. I thought they were one of the good ones. 😩

The entire staff was very friendly. Our server Jenny was knowledgeable and very helpful with suggestions. The food was hot, fresh and full of flavor. We didn’t have to wait long. The appetizers came out before the meal, as it should. Thai Dye pizza (not pictured) was recommended but not on the menu. It was delicious!  Pictured is The great white / vegetable Pizza and the Cloud 9 wings (Parmesan garlic). I will definitely be back to this location.

New burgers are horrible and need to be removed from the menu. It says they’re served “smashed burger style”.. As you can see, it’s most certainly not smashed at all. It’s a dry puck of meat. Also, the bun was clearly frozen because even after lightly grilling it was still cold. Tater tots were wretched and also tasted like they were frozen and then barely baked to defrost. I tried one and spit it out. The bruschetta was a soggy mess. Stick to their pizza (which I love) and avoid everything else.

I recently had a disappointing experience at Mellow Mushroom in downtown Decatur that left a sour taste in my mouth—quite literally. Upon arrival, I noticed the restaurant was nearly empty, which set the expectation for prompt service. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Despite the lack of patrons, it took over an hour for my small pizza to arrive. The staff claimed that the ticket dispenser had jammed, yet I watched as customers who arrived after me were served without any issues. It was incredibly frustrating, especially since my little boy was eagerly waiting for his meal.

When the pizza finally arrived, it was underwhelming at best—not worth the long wait. While I appreciate that management comped the pizza due to the delay, I found it petty that they still charged me for my sweet tea. If I were in their position, I would have been genuinely apologetic and would have offered a complimentary drink as well.

Overall, this experience has left me disgusted, and I can’t see myself returning to Mellow Mushroom. It’s clear that their service issues are a contributing factor to why the restaurant was so empty during my visit. I hope they can improve, but I won’t be part of that journey.

I went to the downtown Decatur location today.  The service was excellent.  I ordered a 10piece roasted wings.  The first problem, I received only 9 wings. The second and most critical problem, they wings were overcooked, tough and were the worst tasting wings I ever received.

If this is your new practice, good luck…you owe it to your customers to do better!!!
