It’s a good budget-ish* hotel a five minute walk from Waikiki.

The decor is a little dated, but satisfactory.

Rooms, ours at least came with a mini kitchen, which helps save money for families.

We did notice a few cockroaches, however I’ve found most tropical budget places have them or similar. Hard to get rid of in that climate. Didn’t bother me.

For a hotel not on the beach the location is wonderful with tons of near by restaurants.

* I’ve found Hawaii accommodations to be very expensive now. Double from just a few years ago. And I hate those stupid resort fees. Ours was $41US a night.

The staff was helpful and friendly, the room was clean, and the location was just what I needed (within walking distance for everything).  However, everything in the room was outdated (by about 30-40 years) and not functioning properly.  Every metal surface was rusted (which I understand with the salt air, but small enough to be addressed in the rooms). The sliding door to the balcony wouldn't slide and I almost got stuck outside a couple times (so I ended up leaving it open once I got outside).  The shower pressure was almost non-existent and kept drastically changing from very hot to ice cold while showering.  They did say they were having plumbing issues while I was there and had to have the water shut off for two hours to make repairs, but the repairs did not fix the pressure or the drastic temperature changes.  Also, there's a $35/night service fee, even if you don't have your room serviced.  So, when you think you're paying $358 +tax for a room, you actually end up paying over $727.  Just a heads up.  I know it was one of the cheaper hotels in the area, but my sister stayed down the block for only $80 more for her stay and their hotel actually had coffee and breakfast for their guests.  I fell like for what I paid, there could have been more amenities and been a nicer room.

This place is a great bang for the buck. Location is pretty handy just about right in the middle of town. I complained about the shower head and there was a new one when I got back at the end of the day. I was also able to get a bunch of rapid rewards points for my southwest account! This made my flight cheaper overall. I'll keep this place on my list for the future.

This hotel is definitely not fancy or anything extra. It is everything we needed and fit the budget. The room was small but cozy, they offered a mini fridge, coffee maker and coffee (as requested). When we arrived our shower head was terrible (no pressure) but when we asked if they would look at it, they did so immediately, and installed a brand new shower head (problem solved). The service was great and employees were very nice.

I didn't really get any clear explanation as to why they charge $35/day on top of the amount paid for booking. Seems like the low price advertised was a bait so tourist will book then ones committed they drop the extra charge on check-in, otherwise no one will book. Think about it guys will you choose this old hotel over 4 stars for the same price? Ofcourse not!
My advice... DON'T GET HOOKED on their lower price ads, IT'S NOT WORTH IT in the end.

Aqua Aloha Surf Waikiki is a great pick if you're traveling on a budget but still want to be in the heart of it all. The rooms are definitely on the small side, but they're super clean and cozy, and they had great AC which is perfect after a day in the sun. You're just a 5-minute walk to tons of great restaurants, coffee shops, and best of all, the beach! Perfect for travelers who'd rather spend their cash on poke bowls and sunsets than square footage.

The attitude toward customer service is poor, with unfriendly facial expressions and words directed at guests. Parking requires payment, yet there are no available spaces; meanwhile, those who manage to park don't have to pay. If you don't want your holiday trip ruined by a bad experience, don't stay at this hotel. avoid it.

Call me crazy. I spent months planning my Hawaii vacation since last May. I booked my room at Aqua Aloha Surf Waikiki Hotel just weeks prior. I guess the hotel prices increase early December. The room price doesn't matter. It's the final cost after the surcharges etc. I learned from most of reviews to understand what everyone is talking about. There is a $35 service charge per day (plus taxes). I only found out about it upon checking out. I booked through MemberDeals.com, a third-party vendor through Govx.com, which I found it reliable and better than AARP Travel Center. After I got my confirmation info, I emailed aahreservations@aquaaston.com to triple confirm my reservation. I don't want to be a victim of fake reservations. I prepaid my reservation $747.58 including taxes with a 72-hour cancellation policy. I got a superior room because of the bed type. When my friend and I arrived at the hotel, the front desk agents were busy. While I waited, I began to enjoying the climate and open air at the lobby. After I put my credit card to pay for incidental charges, she handed both of us shell leis. How lovely. There are some perks like free Bishop Museum admission for staying there. But we were too busy with the schedule. I didn't get a chance to enjoy them. We had our takeout dinner on the lanai. My friend and I enjoyed the breeze from Manoa Valley. I didn't get to see the fabulous view until next morning. Because of time zone difference, we woke up before sunrise and watched the sun slowly peeking through the mountain. I can't remember if we could see the ocean from the lanai. But the views of high-rise buildings were sufficient. There was a short walking distance to the beach. But I walked up and down Ala Wai Blvd for morning exercise instead. The hotel guests were cordial and housekeeping staff was friendly. I was very happy to use the laundry facility at the basement. I bought detergent at ABC Store, which was same price as at the front desk. It costed me $4.75 for washing and drying. I just swiped them with my credit card. I rented a car one day for a circle-island tour. Parking was easy at the side lot or in the basement. I just had to register the car at the front desk and pay $35. It gave me in and out privileges. Street parking is very limited. I rarely see opening. I didn't get a chance to lay at the pool. Because it was cold in February. I checked several times a day for the sun to hit the lounge chairs, but it never happened. I decided to walk around Kuhio Avenue in the sun instead. Room amenities were very efficient. There was a coffeemaker with coffee packs above microwave oven. I have to go to front desk to ask for tea bags. The refrigerator is hidden in the TV cabinet. It worked too well. My fruits came out frozen next day. Hahaha. I bought a gallon size drinking water from the store and got my refill of filtered water from the lobby, along with ice cubes. I don't know why but I felt so relaxed. Everything is within reach. Hot water came out so quick and pressure was strong. It didn't take long to complete a shower as the soap and shampoo dispensers were installed on the wall. Washing sink being outside of the enclosed bathroom was a plus. I wish there was a small table for eating. I grabbed the outdoor chair as table instead. We really enjoyed our stay at Aqua Aloha Surf Waikiki. Check-out process was quick. I shall return. p.s. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! Rooms are really small. I paid for our room on booking.com $160+ & then had to pay a $40+ fee n a $100 deposit when I arrived which I didn't know about. I just wanted a place to stay for the night so my bf n I didn't have to drive hm after a long night. They don't hv parking for those staying 1 night so I had to park blocks away & that's a separate charge & a long walk back. Then u hv to go through some bs w/the front desk n the guy was rude. I've stayed here for several more business trips since my first review. I've never stayed at any other hotel in Oahu. The lobby is beautiful and really convenient for Uber pickups the way it is open to the outdoors. The rooms have always been clean and the beds comfortable. The upgrade to a premium room is still cheaper than most of the competitors' rooms. The balcony feels luxurious. There is sadly no breakfast available in the post-covid era. I've gotten more focused on my fitness lately. It's unclear whether the place has a gym. From other reviews it looks like they had a small one pre-covid and then got rid of it post-covid. I'll be staying here again in April 2025, but might switch hotels for the next business trip after this if they don't have a gym. The AC is kind of noisy, and the room is lacking in good light-blocking curtains (they are room-darkening but not the level of light-blocking you would get in a Hilton or Hyatt). The lack of good light-blocking curtains would normally be a bigger problem for me as a night owl, but coming form Ohio, I can wake up with the sun in Hawaii thanks to the time change. And if I want to sleep in I have my sleep mask.

My husband and I stayed here for our Hawaiian vacation. We booked through an Air B and B. My husband and I stayed in room 510... a corner room, wonderful views. We loved waking up and watching the sunrise. (We're from Chicago and we are 5 hours ahead of Hawaii, so 5am here is 10am Chicago, we never really adjusted to the time change lol). I read previous reviews about the air conditioning in the building not getting extremely cold, so when ours did the same, it wasn't a deal breaker. Our host provided a fan so it was fine. Our room was in walking distance (3 minute walk) of the Waikīkī market and ABC store which sells alcohol, snacks, souvenirs, etc., across the street from a coffee shop and restaurant. The beach is probably a 5 minute walk. Our hosts were wonderful, if we needed them, they were a phone call or an app message away. A few things our room needed, get the ac checked so it can get the room extremely cold not just cool, bigger garbage can for the kitchen, the one provided is perfect for a bathroom, but 2 water bottles completely filled the garbage can. More toilet paper, 3 rolls for 2 adults for 7 days is not enough same for paper towels. They provided a pot and a skillet, but no tongs or spatula. Couldn't make pancakes. Made spaghetti, but no strainer. We also only had 1 hand towel. We had 2 bath towels and 2 face towels, but only 1 hand towel. These things are not deal breakers, We would definitely stay here again. We had a wonderful trip. It was our first time visiting Hawaii and it won't be our last. Mahalo

Neither this hotel nor their parent company, Aqua-Aston are BBB accredited. AVOID at all costs! TLDR; Shady business practices like hidden fees. I originally booked this hotel through a package deal at Priceline. Prior to booking, I was shown information such as 24/7 check-in (which I needed due to my late flight arrival time) and that the price was all inclusive of taxes and fees. After booking, which was non-refundable, I come to find a message from the hotel that check-in after 9 PM is not possible. I contacted the hotel to coordinate and came to find out there is a resort fee of $40 per night. This was not part of the original terms I signed for on Priceline. After contacting a supervisor at Priceline, they confirmed that there was indeed false advertising and still could not get the property to fully refund me. Insane! These people suck harder than a succubus. AVOID

The reviews sounded so positive but that was not our experience. The rats the size of cats outdoors scurrying around and the cockroaches that met us in the room was the start. Dingy sheets and a smell that made my husband nauseous half the night.... we had to cancel the rest of our stay there and go to another hotel. I guess you get what you pay for - bargain shopping for a hotel isn't the way to have a nice vacation.

Honestly, I wouldn't book again. The first room we got smelled horrible right when we walked into the room. Smelled like mildew/wet dog. Started getting itchy while sitting on the couch and beds. You get what you pay for. If I could redo this, I would've booked a refundable room. The asian man at the front desk was extremely rude and not helpful at all.

Only good thing is the location near downtown and the beach. Service was poor and unfriendly at check-in, and parking was a waste of money--paid guests often had no space.
