I have to admit that I am not fun of Indian food and get it every so often, like once in a few years. So I went to this place because it was recommended as something out of this world by a few of my friends. I have to admit,  I see their point,  everyone mentioned their fish and yes branzino backed in the banana leaf was very very good. Prawns baked in coconut were not bad, too. Minced goat appetizer was too spicy,  but, yet that's is my take on it, for the lovers of spicy food it could be just fine. The mixed drink that was way too sweet was removed from the bill without any hesitation. So the only thing I can complain about is they dish size advisory, the main course dishes have been advertised as sharable for 2-3 people. But I can easily finish fish by myself, and there were only 3 prawns in coconut,  which is fine for one person,  but not really enough to share between 2 people.  Another thing, the place isn't cheap for this kind of restaurant and their tip suggestions start from 20%. What happened with good old and very reasonable 18%? I mean, I get it, I am living in the same economy,  but I think it is unreasonable, considering that the prices spicy in the first place. 2 beers, 2 main dishes, and 1 appetizer between 2 people with 20% tip will cost you about $100 per person.

Stepping into this charming Indian restaurant, I was immediately struck by the warm, inviting atmosphere. The décor is a perfect balance of colorful and light touches, creating a cozy environment without feeling cramped. It’s an ideal setting for a relaxed evening out.

One of the highlights of my visit was the Bengali Renaissance cocktail—a true masterpiece. With each sip, layers of flavors unfolded, blending creativity and balance. It was one of the most unique and memorable drinks I’ve had in a while.

The food menu, thankfully, is not overwhelming. Often, Indian restaurants can inundate you with too many options, but here it was thoughtfully curated. I was especially thrilled that they offered a tasting platter, which allowed me to try a variety of dishes—perfect for those indecisive moments!

As for the food itself? Delicious, with bold flavors and just the right amount of heat. Each bite was rich in spices and well-balanced. One small note: I wished they had more of their delightful pickled condiments available on the table—they added a wonderful tangy contrast to the meal.

The staff was attentive and friendly without being pushy, ensuring that our experience was smooth and enjoyable. Despite feeling satisfied, I left the restaurant comfortably full, not overly stuffed—a rare achievement.

Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking to explore Indian cuisine in a cozy, welcoming setting.

The food was delicious and the service was really wonderful and speedy. The food was also really unique and offers a different experience in the world of Indian food. The staff is really attuned to your needs. They offer menu suggestions so help manage spice level. Delicious vegetarian options and the tasting menu is 100% worth it to get a little sampling of all the good things.

The food was amazing, service was quick and wonderful. We were in a large group of 9 ...the waiter was very helpful in explaining the dishes and portion sizes.
The Kosha mangsho was very spicy. But everything else that we tried was very flavorful and nostalgic.
Dishes we tried and definitely recommend...fish fry, beguni for starters. Daab chingri, luchi, ghee bhaat, chicken rezala, mach bhapa, chanar dalna, bhapa doi Each was exquisite.

Now,   a word of caution. This restaurant has no phone number listed. If you need to make reservations for a group bigger than 4...you need to email the restaurant. This is not mentioned anywhere and you need to guess. Suggestion...to lay out these instructions on the website. The 4 stars is because of the reservation experience.

Gorgeous restaurant with a menu that both tastes elevated and authentic to the Bengali food I grew up eating. Staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and the dishes are fun without feeling gimmicky. You can’t go wrong with any of the options but the coconut chingri and bhapa doi are absolutely must orders! Coming back here any time I’m even remotely on the east coast, I don’t care if I have to Amtrak over this place is just that good.

Masalawala & Sons, established on September 22, 2022, in Park Slope, Brooklyn, is a revival of the original Masalawala restaurant that operated from 2011 to 2021. The restaurant is helmed by chef Chintan Pandya and restaurateur Roni Mazumdar, known for their work with Unapologetic Foods, which also owns Dhamaka, Semma, Rowdy Rooster, and Adda.
