I’ve always wanted to go to Dooky Chase’s. I mean, Leah Chase, y’all—the queen of Creole cuisine. This woman is a straight-up legend, a cultural icon, and one of my personal heroes. When I finally booked my reservation, I was giddy as hell, like a kid waiting to meet Santa, except instead of candy canes, I was dreaming about gumbo and fried chicken. And let me tell you, this place did not disappoint.

From the second I walked in, I could feel the history radiating off the walls. The staff? Absolute gems. You ever meet folks so friendly and genuine you’re like, “Y’all are too good for this world?” That’s how I felt. They make you feel like family—like your aunt who tells you to sit down and eat because you look like you haven’t had a decent meal in weeks, even though you clearly have.

Our Family of 29 recently went for 70th Birthday Celebration and the private dining room was BEAUTIFUL and the art work was breathtaking. STAFF AND FOOD WAS ALSO BEAUTIFUL. We had the lovely opportunity of meeting one of the Grand Daughters of this beautiful establishment and she gave us a brief history on the establishment and how they continue her grandfather’s LEGACY FOR WHOM THE PLACE IS NAMED AFTER BECAUSE HE STARTED IT. I definitely recommend

Had a fantastic meal at Dooky Chase, it's not cheap but it's quality and more than fair pricing for what you get.

Calling for a reservation was impossible as it's only open from 530om to 9pm on Saturday and. Kept getting voicemail. Took a shot and just showed up and lucky they had a table.

Ordered a cup of gumbo which was delicious, also had the Southern fried chicken also delicious and the creamy side of Mac was fantastic. Also had a side of Mustard Greens I wanted to try which but want to my liking. A little salty for my taste but that's a personal thing.

The servers were friendlly, the decor interesting and with a homey feeling.

All staff members were very friendly and polite. We had reservations on a Saturday night with a table for four guests and we were immediately seated when we checked in with the host. Our waiter BJ was super friendly, polite, attentive, and informative. We did not have to wait long to receive our appetizers once we ordered and our main course was ready not too long after. Everyone sitting at our table was satisfied with our bellies full asking me how I could possibly have any room for dessert. The main course was so good I had to sample the praline bread pudding and it did not disappoint. As a local born native, in my opinion, Dooky Chase Restaurant might be the best restaurant in the city! 10 out of 10. Would recommend. I will be back and recommend this place to anyone and everyone.

This is a New Orleans staple and people line out the door to get their table. You definitely need a reservation. We made ours well in advance and could only get a 5:30 table. The line is long but it moved quickly.

The place is cute and well cared for. The service was a little off. Our server started real good and then kinda forgot about us. Other tables with a different server seemed to have better more attentive service. We never got a drink refill on alcohol or bread like we asked. Now whoever was in charge of filling water glasses was on his game.

Based on the waiter’s recommendation we had the fried chicken (do not miss this!), we also had the crab cake appetizer and it was good! My wife liked her crab stuffed shrimp as well. The peach cobbler was also excellent !!

They are very reasonable priced too; I was actually surprised about how reasonable it was compared to every other meal I had this past week.

The cocktails were especially good.

min familj och jag hade vår pre - kryssning middag på din restaurang den 19 september. Vi var en fest på sju som firade min 75-årsdag. Jag tänkte inte skicka det här, men min son uppmuntrade mig att göra det. Minst sagt, vi var alla mycket missnöjda med våra måltider. Vi blev alla så besvikna. Det verkar som om du har två stora kastruller i köket. En med Brown Gravy och en med Red Gravy. Här är några av de artiklar vi beställde:

Inget var nygjort. Ingen åt hela sin måltid. Du kanske undrar varför vi inte skickade tillbaka allt. Ingen ville klaga och sätta en dämpare på min födelsedag. Under åren har jag ätit här flera gånger och alltid haft en bra upplevelse. Det var därför jag var glad att ha min födelsedagsmiddag där. Vi kommer diffidently inte att rekommendera din restaurang till vänner som reser till New Orleans

Ett hjärtskärande besök på en gång legendarisk institution

Som infödd New Orleanian, som gick in genom dörrarna till Dooky Chase den 24 september 2025 , för min mammas födelsedag borde ha känts som att komma hem. Sista gången jag åt här var post - Katrina, när den framlidne, store Leah Chase levde - som rörde sig graciöst genom sitt kök, och såg till att varje tallrik bar hennes signaturkärlek, omsorg och New Orleans kreolska matlagnings omisskännliga själ. På den tiden var Dooky Chase inte bara en restaurang; det var en upplevelse – smaker som svepte in dig som en familj, ett utrymme som innehöll historia, stolthet och excellens i varje tugga. 

Den här gången var det dock en smärtsam påminnelse om hur långt denna legendariska restaurang har fallit. 

Vi hade stora förhoppningar och beställde alla klassiker som definierade söndagsmiddagar och familjefester – gumbo, stekt kyckling, mac och ost, senapsgrönsaker, röda bönor och ris, fyllda räkor, skaldjurstallrik och stekt mjuk - skalkrabba. Till efterrätt avslutade vi med brödpudding och persikopaj. Varje maträtt, trodde vi, skulle återkoppla oss till de omhuldade minnena. Istället blev vi chockade över bristen på omsorg, kryddning och själ. 

Gummin, även om den var något smakrik, var vattnig och tunn. När jag frågade om fisk och skaldjur ingick, fick jag försäkran ”räkor och blå krabba.” Ändå var min kopp ofruktbar – varken räkor eller krabbor rörde vid min sked. För en restaurang som skryter som en hörnsten i det kreolska köket var detta förkrossande. 

Den stekta kycklingen anlände mörk, nästan bränd, och bitande i den avslöjade rosa, underkokt kött. Senapsgrönsaker smakade direkt ur en burk — överväldigad av vinäger, helt tom på den långsamma - sjudna, rökiga ömhet som generationer av mormödrar fulländade. Mac och ost, en gång kronjuvelen i själamat, såg fel ut innan den första tuggan, och bekräftade min misstanke med sin intetsägande, livlösa smak. 

De röda bönorna var den största förolämpningen av alla. Hård, underkokt, saknar krämighet, och kryddad med inget igenkännbart. Ingen lök, ingen vitlök, inget salt eller peppar. I New Orleans är det nästan en synd att koka röda bönor dåligt – det här är rätten som ankrar staden, och här var den oigenkännlig. 

Fisk- och skaldjursrätterna var inte bättre. Den mjuka - skalkrabban torkades ut och smaklöst, medan de fyllda räkorna stektes hårda som läder, rånade på all suckulens. Varje tallrik kändes som om den hade stressats, förbisetts och serverats utan stolthet. 

Vi bad att desserten skulle återlösa måltiden, men istället serverades persikopajen och brödpuddingen i små portioner, som båda saknade den värme och komfort som borde definiera kreolskt godis. De såg ut och smakade som eftertankar. 

För allt detta betalade vi mer än 300 dollar plus dricks. Vi gick ut inte bara otillfredsställda, utan med en tung sorg — för det som en gång var hjärtat i kreolsk mat känns nu som ett ihåligt skal av sitt forna jag. 

Dooky Chases webbplats proklamerar fortfarande sin stolta historia – dess roll som en samlingsplats för medborgarrättsledare, konstnärer och presidenter. Det bär fortfarande tyngden av Leah Chase arv, en kvinna som inte bara var kock, men drottningen av kreolsk Cuisine, en kulturell ikon som trodde på att mata människors själar genom sin mat. Och ändå skulle det som serveras idag aldrig motsvara hennes standard. Leah skulle inte godkänna mat fråntagen sin kärlek, omsorg och äkthet. 

Vi vill att Dooky Chase ska lyckas. Vi vill fortsätta att rekommendera den till besökare, för att fira födelsedagar, årsdagar och milstolpar inom dess väggar. Men som det är nu, kan jag inte rekommendera denna restaurang till någon. New Orleans är fyllt med inrättningar som fortfarande respekterar traditionen, fortfarande lagar mat med smak, kärlek och stolthet. Tills Dooky Chase hittar tillbaka till Leahs standard, har den förlorat sin rätt att hävda kronan av kreolsk mat. 

Leah sa en gång: ”Du skapar gumbo, du skapar historia.” Min förhoppning är att den här familjeägda institutionen minns sin historia, återupptäcker sin smak och återvänder till det själamatstempel den en gång var. För hennes arvs skull, för staden, och för de av oss som växte upp som visste vad Dooky Chase brukade betyda — snälla, gör bättre.

Helt underbar mat och Service. Jag har inte ätit en så här god måltid på länge. Jag har varit i New Orleans minst ett halvdussin gånger och det här är första gången jag besöker - DET ÄR ETT MÅSTE! Gå av Bourbon Street för denna verkligt autentiska upplevelse. 

Och om du är ett Disney-fan finns det några godbitar av konst eftersom Leah Chase var inspiration för prinsessan Tiana. Men Leah Chase var en drottning! 

Tips: 
 - Definitivt få en bokning (börja leta en månad i förväg) 
 - Planera att vara här i minst 90 minuter till två timmar. Maten lagas färsk, vi åt förrätt, varmrätt och dessert på knappt två timmar (två personer) 
 - Canal spårvagn är ungefär en halv mil bort, bra för att ha en sann New Orleans Experience om du kommer upp från Franska kvarteren

Mycket upptagen men utmärkt vän kyckling. Vi gick dit för lunch och IT verkade vara en lika blandning av lokalbefolkningen och besökare.

Det var många år sen vi åt här. WOW! Kändes lite bra att vara en historisk miljö i New Orleans. Maten var utmärkt. Mycket populär och välförtjänt.

Historien om det var stor. De har också en underbar personal. Men maten var överväldigande. Gumbon hade mer en tunn, vattnig konsistens. Kryddningen av krabbfyllda räkor var avstängd och serverades med några bitar torr potatis. Men brödpuddingen var god, serverad varm och söt.

Vilken fantastisk upplevelse att prova Chase familjens mat! Vi gjorde reservationer endast för middag så snart de var tillgängliga (ca 2 veckor innan) . Vår dag i French Quarter slutade tidigare än väntat, så vi tänkte att vi kanske kunde dyka upp tidigt och ta en drink i baren innan middagen. Vi blev förvånade över att komma ca 30 minuter innan de öppnade, för att se en linje bildas vid dörren. Vi väntade till öppningsdags och gick med i kön. Det rörde sig snabbt som en av värdinnorna flyttade in oss och sa att hon skulle vara tillbaka runt för att se till att de med reservationer var sittande först. Otroligt nog sa hon att de skulle kunna ta emot oss direkt, trots att vi var en timme för tidigt ute. Visst, vi satte oss snabbt. Från denna punkt kände vi ärligt talat som om det var en familj som välkomnade oss i sitt hem - alla servrar var leende och vänliga, engagera sig i samtal, inte bara göra sina jobb. Den andra värdinnan arbetade hårt för att se till att folk var respektfulla mot restaurangen och andra kunder genom att se till att klänning "kod" följdes (men inte "fancy", är detta en vit bordsduk anläggning - inte bära baseball kepsar, t - skjortor, flip flops eller cutoff shorts! ). Vi började med Dooky Shrimp - 5 stora cocktailräkor i en hussås, på en bädd av blandade grönsaker (utsökt! ). Våra huvudrätter vid bordet var den stekta ankan (min son bara fortsatte yra om sötpotatisen) , den "berömda" stekta kycklingen (min man valde blandat ljust/mörkt kött) med jambalaya till sidan, och Louisiana röd fisk kreol med succotash - som visade sig vara allas favorit (och jag var tyvärr tvungen att dela! ). Vi åt persikopaj, brödpudding och chokladjordnötssmörpaj till efterrätt - pajen var fantastisk. En trevlig flaska vin att åtfölja vår middag var bra prissatt. Sammantaget levde detta upp till vad vi hade hoppats och vi är mycket glada att vi fick vara en del av familjen, om så bara för ett par timmar!

Den som säger något annat ljuger rakt ut... det här stället var enastående. Bara Mac n Cheese var värt resan. Röda bönor och Ris med 2 st, fyllda räkor med M&C och gumbo. Verkligen enastående.

Vi fick faktiskt aldrig beställa. Min fru och jag hade en 1 pm reservation. Vi kom dit och blev tillsagda att vänta i baren. Detta var bra eftersom det var bara en 5 minuters väntan. Vi satte oss och väntade. Inte en enda person kom för att erkänna oss. Efter att ha väntat i över en halvtimme blev vi upprörda. Folk omkring oss stirrade på oss och undrade vad som var fel. Slutklämmen var när par som satt efter oss, skulle servas! Vi reste oss och gick. Jag klagade men det var ingen idé. Vi gick.

Vi stannade för lunch och såg fram emot att prova deras mat. Efter en kort sökning för vår bokning vi satt snabbt. Jag beställde röda bönor och ris med 2 bitar kyckling och min fru stekt kyckling med en sida av jambalaya. Ungefär 20 minuter senare blev vi serverade. Vi delade våra förrätter och tyckte att röda bönor och ris var utmärkt och det bästa av vår beställning. Kycklingen var mycket god och kom på andra plats följt av jambalaya. Min fru beställde också pralinbrödpuddingen att äta senare på kvällen till dessert men måste säga att det var en besvikelse. 
Vi njöt helt av våra måltider och erfarenheten var stor, alla hade en bra tid och hela personalen engagerade särskilt vår server Terry. 
Vi kommer inte hit så ofta men kommer att stanna igen när vi är tillbaka i området. 
Åh vi fick också träffa barnbarnet till Dooky Chase och han var mycket trevlig och bör vara stolt över vad han har kunnat upprätthålla och göra sin mormor stolt.

Vi åt middag och det var en underbar upplevelse. Vi smakade det kreolska köket som var utmärkt. Alla där var också välkomnande och mycket vänlig. Jag rekommenderar starkt att åka dit. Du kommer också att andas atmosfären av en plats fylld med historia.

Åtnjöt underbara gumbos, kyckling och ris och bönor. För att inte tala om lavendeldrycken. Nödvändigt att reservera ett bord, är detta ett populärt ställe.

Åk inte till New Orleans utan att äta på denna fantastiska restaurang! Skaldjurstallrik är fantastiskt men nästa gång ska jag bara äta sidor! Allt är så bra.

Vi hade en underbar matupplevelse på Dooky Chase från det ögonblick vi anlände, gästfriheten var exceptionell. Medan vi väntade på vårt bord slappnade vi av i baren, där bartendrarna var varma, vänliga och ivriga att dela med sig av sin kunskap. Vi hade till och med ett bra samtal om en speciell whisky, farbror Nearest. 

Höjdpunkten på vårt besök var att träffa dottern / ägaren, som var nådig och charmig. När det gäller maten var det helt utsökt! Vi njöt av en mängd olika rätter, inklusive stekt tallrik, rödbetssallad, stekt kyckling och gumbo - som alla var enastående. 

Vi rekommenderar starkt Dooky Chase och kommer definitivt att återvända när i området.

Den bästa restaurangen i NOLA, och den bästa Cajun mat vi hade under hela vår resa, kommer vi aldrig att glömma Gumbo och den stekta kycklingen. 
Vi provade andra restauranger som vänner hade rekommenderat till oss, de var mycket bra, men jag kommer inte att skriva en recension om dem, det här är den jag älskade. 
Dooky Chase var så bra att min fru dansade medan hon åt sin Gumbo. När de märkte detta, de gav oss en gratis Gumbo att ta tillbaka till vårt hotell och fortsätta njuta av det. 
Platsen i sig är verkligen vacker, med en fantastisk, vänlig och intressant atmosfär som pågår. Jag kände att jag borde ha använt kostymjacka, åtminstone för att se smartare ut. . . 
Människorna där är precis utanför denna värld, jag skulle älska att hänga där längre och lära känna var och en av dem väl. 
Vi kommer att återvända för säker!
