L’Affaire est Ketchup is a truly special dining experience. You need to reserve at least three days in advance, but it’s absolutely worth it. The moment you walk in, you’re welcomed into a cozy, intimate space that feels more like a friend’s kitchen than a restaurant—small but filled with warmth and passion.

The menu changes daily, based on what’s fresh and in season. At the beginning of the night, the waiter introduces the entire menu for everyone, which adds to the communal feel of the place. No printed menus—just a verbal rundown of what’s great that day. And everything is great. Every dish is cooked with care, bursting with flavor, and beautifully presented.

The atmosphere is relaxed, unpretentious, and full of character. It’s clear that everyone working here loves what they do, and that energy is contagious. If you’re looking for an unforgettable meal in Quebec City, this is it. Just make sure to book ahead!

Interesting dining experience. It was our first time, and we did need some explaining of the concept. They have a seasonal or select small menu of a few appetizers to select from and a few main dishes to select from. At a certain point, they will explain the menu to the entire restaurant in the form of a group announcement in both French and English. They then come around and take your tables entire order. There was a bit of pressure to order now. Food is served when it's served. They do tell you they serve the restaurant in portions or sections at a time. Overall, it was a decent dining experience. The food was good, well prepared, presentation was good, portion sizes on the smaller to average side. I could recommend this restaurant for a small group wanting a different dining experience. Nothing really wowed me fully, though. Service is on the casual side. The main server was friendly, joking, and trilingual! What I personally found a bit lacking was the lack of a cocktail menu. They did have a wine menu and 1 seasonal cocktail. Although it was a bit on the fruity side. I personally prefer a few stronger craft cocktail options in a restaurant of this venu type.

This is tough to write and I have similar feelings to other low reviews. Throughout the dinner, I had feelings of sadness and anxiety due to the poor service.

The whole entry process is confusing and odd. We were the second party to go through the door that night. When the first party entered, it was clear there were 4 other parties outside; however, the door was slammed in my face. I had to open the door and ask, Can I come in? The host said yeah, asked me two fast questions I couldn’t understand, then ran to answer the phone while I stood there confused.

I was first to be outside to enter, but someone else got the window seat. It felt like fighting for a good seat.

It took 25 minutes to be waited on and receive wine. After our wine glasses were empty, it took another 20 minutes to be asked if we wanted more drinks. At a good service restaurant, they notice when I have a quarter of a drink left or so and ask before it’s empty if I want more.

When the food arrived, there was no explanation or reminder of what’s on the plate. There’s a lot of detail and effort into the food (!!) so I felt they could do a better job of explaining.

They desperately need better ventilation. My clothes, hair, and coat (still) smell like smoke and beef.

The food was good, but wholly overshadowed by the service.

Overall, it was a letdown. Oh, and stepping out the door of the restaurant I rolled my ankle, so that’s a rough start to a holiday, in addition to the experience

The space is very small and simple, with lots of character. Make your reservation and make sure to arrive on time, as everyone’s food is served at the same time.
The menu changes often and is very short, but there were lots of interesting options.
We had the Cobia gravlax and the pork croquette as appetizers, both incredible.
As main we both had the contre-filet, and it was definite the best meat I’ve had ever since I moved to Canada.
As dessert we couldn’t choose between the chocolate brownie and the carrot cake - so we ordered both!
Servings are a good size - you can have a three course meal or skip one course and still be full. Staff is super friendly and professional.
Overall a great experience and will definitely be back when we’re back in town!

My husband and I were visiting from NY and wanted to check out this restaurant on Bourdain’s recommendation. From the outside, the restaurant is unassuming. The dining area is quaint but comfortable, and the staff took time to share the menu and made each table familiar with the various dishes. I have a sensitivity to onion and garlic, and the kitchen shared dishes that they could adapt to this need. I was so grateful for this! High attention and care to detail throughout the experience.

The food was exceptional. From appetizers to mains and desserts, we were very pleased. Everything was excellent.

If you have a moment to peek into the kitchen, do so! It is incredible the magic this restaurant is creating with so few chefs and such a modest kitchen. Highly impressive and we will absolutely return.
