I enjoyed the Ah Makase tasting menu today for lunch at Candelnut. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience! The food was delicious and a good balance of sweet, salty and spicy. My server was a kind man who offered detailed explanations of each dish and good insight into local life. I really appreciated getting to understand the history of each dish and meanings behind different elements of the dish. I was dining solo, so enjoyed the comfortable and relatively quiet environment too.

The restaurant is a little out of town, so best to take a taxi or Grab to get there.

We got a menu. Waiters explained perfectly what we are going to eat and how to eat to enjoy the food. The food was balanced, spicyness wasn't overwhelming, was just right and make food delicious (as russians that wasn't too spicy. The white wine was fruity and nice. Overall recommend to visit, the star is deserved.

As it was our first time, we had the cheekily named “Ah Ma kase”. It did not disappoint. They tried very hard with their service and we appreciate the effort. Perhaps if the food introduction did not feel like a memorised presentation, the experience would have been more elevated. Overall, a good experience.

Candlenut is definitely overrated. First, the atmosphere was noisy even at half full and quite cold as our table was directly beneath an air conditioning vent. We had the set menu. While some dishes were tasty and well presented. Most of them were cold. We were expecting more from this Michelin star restaurant.

TLDR: quite disappointing considering the price and portions.

Taste-wise only the pie tee, Ngoh Hiang met standards. Note pie-tee was SGD10 each and a minimum of four pieces must be ordered for ala carte.

Wing bean salad was very sour even though I love acidity. Told this to our server who said she would pass the feedback to the kitchen but she did not get back to us afterwards.

The "mum's chicken curry" consisted of ONE chicken drumstick and a few small breast pieces. It was dry too. As we didn’t hear back on the salad, I did not feel compelled to provide this feedback to the staff anymore.

Beef rendang was soft but didn't have that much fragrance from spices.

They had high ceilings but to have so much dirt and what looks like mildew (see video) on the aircon vents blowing directly to diners below was rather unhygienic and not what one would normally associate with a one Michelin star restaurant. Please clean this up @candlenutsg

Service was quite good: I appreciate that we could reschedule the timing two times and the complimentary birthday kuih. However, one staff had attitude when we asked for the menu (found it quite odd that the menus were not provided straight away after sitting the diner, but we had to ask for it and it was only provided five minutes later) and to be seated to another table since a table was quite chilly with the strong aircon blowing directly.

Overall, a disappointing venue as I had chosen this place to celebrate my aunt's birthday and have been wanting to visit for years. What's worse when you book a place that is sub-par? My aunt and uncle wouldn't let me pay for the meal too. Oh the guilt of picking a sub-par place for a celebration.

I honestly do not know how they managed to obtain one Michelin star for a number of years. But then again... sometimes one simply just should not trust the Michelin system.
