Culinary nirvana/enlightenment!  One of the best meals of my life, and such an incredibly delightful and delicious experience.  If you're ever anywhere near Bruges: it's soooo worth whatever effort is needed to dine at Brasserie Grand Cru.

We were lucky enough to get a dinner reservation (which was reconfirmed a day ahead of time -par for the course with upscale restaurants nowadays) when we were traveling through Bruges, and it was a lovely 2.2km/30 min walk from our hotel (Hotel Dukes' Palace) through charming residential / canal-side neighborhoods - which was both a terrific way to work-up a good appetite and to walk-off a bit of that incredibly decadent meal.

Upon arrival, we were greeted immediately with tail wags from the chef's adorable tiny little dog that obediently sits outside the kitchen area watching his master create culinary masterpieces.  Our hostess / server / bartender (I believe the chef's partner?) was delightful, warm, very helpful in guiding us through a considerable menu and wine list - and all of her recommendations were spot-on.

Following a very tasty gratis amuse bouche, we ordered the peak-of-the-season Flemish-style asparagus appetizer (richly sublime: buttery, eggy, herby, awesome!), and then I had their cassoulet which absolutely blew doors off of any other that I've had in France or even at some of the best French restaurants in the United States.  It was rich, and yet not too heavy, it was chock-full of fantastic meats (and I suspect the sausages were homemade), beans, herbs and a heavenly tomato-infused broth.  My husband had the grilled ribeye of a special breed of Angus, served with the most aromatic herbs, and a side of incredibly delicious potatoes that would make even Chef Joël Robuchon delighted.  For dessert, we shared a Dame Blanche with homemade ice cream (ethereal) complemented by homemade cookies and an impossibly silky chocolate sauce.

I'm still dreaming of those dishes.

Prices were incredibly fair/appropriate considering the wonderful atmosphere (charming indoor tables adjacent to a show-stopper dream kitchen with Chef Yvo Degraeve as a nearly one-man magic show.  The outside garden patio wasn't opened that night, but was a zen-like backdrop to our sunset hour meal), very high-quality season ingredients, and lovely service -all of which should be expected from a very worthy Michelin-starred restaurant.  We enjoyed this meal and overall experience far more than numerous other three Michelin star restaurants - and at a fraction of the cost of the latter.  It was also one of the most casual Michelin-experiences I've had - it was not pompous, stuffy or formal -just wonderfully approachable and exquisite.

I'm now looking for any excuse to travel nearly half-way across the world to dine there again.

Deilcious food, cared to the very detail. The meats are amazing, as is the interior. A perfect location for any opportunity, from winter evening to summer lunch!
