This was a top two dining experience of my life. The only other competitor was Core by Claire Smyth in London (a 3-star Michelin restaurant).

It's hard to believe food can taste this good. Even compared to other fantastic restaurants in NYC, even Michelin rated ones, this goes above and beyond them in quality and taste.
The Temperance Pairing is a must. Two in our party got it, and even though they were willing to share tastes with the others, I was jealous even though we were drinking wonderful wines.

Come expecting an experience that may just change the way you view food.

This review is overdue.  I've dined at Atera since 2017 every time I visit NYC, at least once a year (minus the pandemic).   It is one of my favorite restaurants in the world.  The Tasting Menu is always simple, beautifully plated, and memorable.  I still remember first tasting their signature osetra caviar with pistachio.  When I last dined in December 2024, my favorite dishes were the truffle comte, and the lobster caviar taco.   There is always an ingredient that makes it unique.  The dessert dishes are equally delicious.  My favorite dessert dishes from the last time I dined were blueberry, lemon, lemongrass, and blood orange with cream and vanilla.  I appreciate the use of fruits in dessert before transitioning to chocolate.

The wine selection is perfect, and the sommelier is helpful.  We usually start with a glass of champagne, opt for a German/Austrian Riesling or White Burgundy, followed by a bottle of Red Burgundy, and perhaps dessert wine.

The service is excellent when you arrive, dine, and depart.  The staff are attentive and knowledgeable.  I appreciate the table counter set-up and observing how the team prepares, communicates, and provides service.  It is elegant but does feel intimidating.

I've been fortunate to dine in Michelin restaurants in 8 countries, including Elven Madison Park, Per Se, and Le Bernardin in New York.  I've consistently enjoyed and preferred my dining experience at Atera over other restaurants.  I am not an 'expert'; I simply appreciate unique flavors and admire the talent and hard work it takes to create and tell a story with dishes and provide the highest level of service. Atera has achieved this every time I have dined.  My criterion is simple: do I remember the dish (and the experience) the next day, and after several years?  And the answer is 'yes' when I dine at Atera.

Impeccable food and service, I enjoyed every minute of the experience.  The restaurant worked with me in advance to accommodate dietary restrictions, and everything went off without a hitch on the day of the meal.  I was especially impressed by the non-alcoholic drink pairing, which had some uniquely intense flavors.  I'll be thinking of that smoked ginger drink for a long time!  Portion sizes are on the smaller side though, so I wouldn't recommend showing up while ravenously hungry.

Late review, but came to Atera last year for a birthday and felt like it was a solid but unspectacular 2-star experience. Dishes were solid albeit a bit on the heavy side, and overall felt like a safe, conventional fine dining meal. Props to opting for A4 instead of A5 wagyu when we dined, as it allowed for us to enjoy the rest of the dishes without feeling too full. Otherwise, it wasn't the most noteworthy.

The counter seating of course is very intimate, but there was not much interaction. Our somm was excellent though, and I will say Atera has the best nonalcoholic pairing in all fine dining.

Overall, I don't regret the experience one bit and can understand it's 2-star rating, but not among the most memorable fine dining experiences we've had.

The owner, Jodi Richard, overhauled the restaurant's kitchen facilities to attract chef Matthew Lightner, who developed a new concept to replace Compose. Enhancements included the installation of a large test kitchen in the basement. Compose officially closed in July 2011, and Atera opened in March 2012, serving a $150 tasting menu with optional wine pairings for an additional $90. Lightner left Atera in 2015, and chef Ronny Emborg took over, reopening the restaurant in May 2015 with a new menu. Jag åt lunch i en komplett pärla till restaurang. Från det ögonblick jag kom jag gjordes mycket välkomna och visades till min plats på den långa u formade baren. Jag var en av endast 11 matgäster som serverades av den verkställande kocken och tre andra kockar plus en underbart kunnig sommelier. Wow maten var en komplett dröm. Varje kurs var en tour de force av kreativitet, smak och matlagning. Jag älskade varje rätt men måste nämna hummer taco, wagu nötkött och kung fisk. Vinet var lika utmärkt och sommelieren var en utmärkt guide. Jag kan inte vänta med att komma tillbaka.

Atera, Det var en utmärkt restaurang, men maten var ännu bättre än hela byggnaden själv! Menyn hade så många saker som lät så bra att det tog mig hela 20 minuter att bestämma, och servicen var jättebra! Det tog bara 15 minuter och sen var det klart. Jag rekommenderar helt denna plats att gå ut för middag, lunch, eller ens att ha en födelsedag på.

En verkligt exceptionell måltid. Varje maträtt var ett konstverk. Så tyvärr, så snart jag placerade min telefon på disken, placerades den i en skinnhylsa som jag förstod att inte betyda några bilder. Det var fascinerande att se varje maträtt monterad och när den presenterades förklarad i detalj. Jag har besökt otaliga restauranger i NYC men ingen kommer nära den här. Mer än en måltid var det en utställning av kockernas kreativitet i en serie rätter. Ett måste.

Kreativitet som topp sammanfattar kocken Ronny Emborgs 17-platsers matupplevelse. Varje maträtt är full av intensiv smak. Tjänsten var sömlöst perfekt, vänlig och effektiv. Inredning och atmosfär var varm och elegant. Detta var den bästa middagsupplevelsen jag hade i New York.

Mycket intressant smakförening och upplevelse. Bra service (4 i köket, 5 till för tjänsten ... för 16 gäster!). . . alla med ett leende och ett subtilt sätt att anpassa sin uppmärksamhet till dina behov. Bra inställning också. Bara ånger är för desserter. . . bra men inte matchar nivån för andra delar.

Vi ätit middag på Atera på vårt senaste besök i New York City och det var en verkligt enastående upplevelse.

Först tyckte vi verkligen om matsalsuppsättningen som sveper runt köket eftersom det gav oss en fantastisk utsikt över matlagningsprocessen. Tjänsten var också vänlig och uppmärksam och ljudspåret som spelades i bakgrunden kuraterad av en av Maitre D hjälpte verkligen till att skapa en rolig men ändå reserverad atmosfär.

Maten var utmärkt hela tiden med några trevliga innovativa kurser och några riktigt smakfulla rätter hela kvällen. Vi lämnade känslan ganska full och lycklig. Vi valde den premiumvinparring som var ganska uppriktigt dyr. Om jag går tillbaka väljer jag en eller två flaskor eller väljer den vanliga parningen.

Totalt bra natt på Atera!

Jag firade min födelsedag Atera och var verkligen blåst bort av maten, tjänsten, atmosfären, inredningen. . . allt. Detta var verkligen kul och uppfinningsrik mat som inte tar sig för allvarligt. Det här är inte en vit bordsdukupplevelse, och jag menar det på bästa möjliga sätt. Tjänsten var spektakulär - diskreta men ändå förutse dina behov. Servrarna är lekfulla och le, och du kan säga att alla är glada att vara där. Många av banorna är pläterade tableside, vilket ger en stor dimension till upplevelsen!

Så, varför lade jag den till en femte stjärna? Medan nästan alla disken var sensationella (verkligt), var de två köttkurserna - väl, ett fjäderfä och ett kött - a) otillräckliga och var) de två minst spännande kurserna på natten. Kycklingbanan hade god smak och lite kul nyans, men i slutet av dagen är det fortfarande kyckling; kalvkursen gick ganska platt. Det behövde salt säkert, men det saknade bara wow-faktorn. I en 15-rätters provsmakningsmeny kunde jag förlåta 1 eller 2 banor inte vara bra, men det var de enda icke-fisk / gröntkursen, så det gjorde det super nedslående. Också, konstigt nog, de har inga fulla vitviner i glaset, vilket är en enorm miss och ganska förbryllande för mig.

Jag ger ärligt detta ställe 4. 5/5 i stället för 4, men eftersom Trip Advisor inte tillåter halvstjärnor, rinner jag ner.

Det var inte perfekt men var jätte nära, och jag skulle springa för att gå tillbaka igen. Jag njöt av erfarenheten långt mer än de andra Michelin-stjärnorna NYC-provsmakningsmenyerna jag har gjort!

Allt är perfekt. Maten är enastående i sin kvalitet, originalitet, fantastisk kombination av smaker, vacker presentation och riktig mat. Örter odlas i sin egen trädgård i en källare i Manhattan. Tjänsten är otroligt, dyr, men ett måste gå.

Vår middag på Atera igår kväll är en av mina favoriter hela tiden. Och jag har haft några ganska spektakulära måltider. Lämna den grusiga stadsgatan utanför och sätt in en lugn kloster av lyx inom detta "hemliga" utrymme. Den fasta menyn var en synkopad rytm av smaklig och söt, varm och cool, subtil och ödmjuk, överraskande och hjärtlig. Det var i ett ord sublimt. Maten är konst här och smakar otroligt. Ja, massor av pincett och eyedroppers som används som disken skapas magiskt framför dig i en slags perfekt balett av kockarna och servrarna som numrerar nästan lika många som diners. Tjänsten är felfri, osynlig, vänlig och opretentiös trots att det är perfekt.

Du har en upplevelse här - inte bara en måltid.

Min man och jag överraska varandra med en speciell middag ute på var och en av våra födelsedagar varje år. Där vi tar den andra avslöjs vi alltid bara i sista sekunden. Under de senaste 15 åren har vi ätit oss igenom en himmelsk galax av Michelin-stjärnor på våra födelsedagar. Atera delades med födelsedags middag # 26 under vårt förhållande, och även om det fanns många fantastiska måltider under vägen utmärker sig Atera och kommer att bli ihågkommen som en av våra allra bästa. En lyxig, rolig, bortskämd måltid full av läckerheter och briljanta smaker, texturer, aromer och helt enkelt läckerhet.

OK så här är muttrarna och bultarna.

Maten är kreativ och mycket välsmakande. Men inte det bästa vi hittade men maten var fantastisk.

Tjänsten var rätt och mycket bra.

Inte en stor plats så det känns mer intimt. Trevligt ställe i trevlig miljö.

Ett mysigt läge, med ett bord för 6 och ca 12 platser på en pall (bekvämt) vid köksdisken. Oklanderlig service, minst 6 servitörer för 20 gäster. En fix-meny som du inte ens vet innan du börjar och det gör det omöjligt att välja ett vin från en omfattande dyr lista, så du väljer vinparing på 175 € per person och du får serveras mestadels champagne och senare 3 småprover av anständigt franska och österrikiska (??) vita, och 3 prov av röda verkligen inget speciellt. Jag föreslår att du köper ett bra italienskt mousserande vin och går med det hela middagen länge. Maten är ok, serveras snabbt och snabbt tar alla gäster upp till samma nivå av servering. Alla portioner är ganska små, men det finns så många att du blir nöjd. Vi njöt av havsborre med kycklinghud, våffla tonfisk och tryffel, hummer morot och öring roe, oxstjärt med grönkål. Alla andra var imponerande från en presentationsberedning men inte från kulinarisk synvinkel. Faktum är att all mat handlade mer om presentation än att laga mat: ostrongurka och jalapegno, ägggryta kombucha, kaviarpistachio och ipa, potatislök och basilika, ostkaka (utan kaka) och några andra har egentligen inget annat än ett bra val av råmaterial och bra plätering.
För allt detta betalade vi i två (fixpris inklusive vinparing) 979, 88 $. Var försiktig tjänsten ingår, jag märkte inte det och de nämnde inte och jag lämnade nästan 200 $ som tips. Jag är säker på att de kommer att älska mig. Förresten, tjänsten är bara bra. Mat. . . . Jag gillar konsten att laga mat, inte plätera.

Den har nästan allt du kan begära; hade varit tidigare och hade tidigare beskrivit det som den ultimata kocktabellen. En underbar atmosfär med kanske 15 platser som omger köket och kockarna, vackert tillagad mat av högsta kvalitet men slutligen misslyckas på grund av bristen på en upplevelse som kommer att etsas i din hjärna.
Zagat beskriver det som "kreativitet i sitt bästa" som jag håller med, men det säger då "en rolig kärleksfull personal" som saknades i aktion på min natt.
Inte säker på om kocken Ronny inte uppskattade att hans mat spelades in och dissekeras av en räknare full av seriös fotografisk utrustning men han slog verkligen inte ett leende hela natten - så ja, underbar mat men roligt, ett bestämt nej.
