This place is so overrated. I’m very surprised at the high ratings. We ordered the margarita, and the pizza was so thin and cold. It did NOT have much mozzarella. My friend and I could barely taste the cheese. But our server was very nice, although another server messed up with our order and served us a focaccia she handled everything for us! Thank you

The best appetizer, and in some ways the restaurant’s greatest achievement, is something called a giant clam. Rhode Islanders will tell you that this is a “stuffie” — a baked clamshell filled with chopped clams and seasoned bread crumbs. What they may not tell you is that most stuffies are awful — dense, soggy and heavy enough to serve as an anchor for a small boat. A Mel’s stuffie, on the other hand, is loosely packed with fresh bread crumbs mixed not just with clams but also chopped shrimp. This is heretical, but the effect is outstanding.

Definitely sit at the bar and watch them cook in the big open kitchen. The gem salad was huge and excellent. Loved the sausage pizza too. The big clam is overrated - can’t taste much of the seafood. Servers kept oddly calling us “friend” and our server had on too much cologne. Worth going back just for the salad and pizza!

Update 5/28/24 - Inconsistent Quality

Had a good experience last time, so I decided to bring my friends here. It was a huge disappointment. The dough felt off and all the pizza was burnt. Basil was not fresh. Broccoli Rabe pizza flavor tasted below average.

The “oil” was just chilly oil, nothing special.

I’m disappointed about the consistency in quality.  Coincidentally, the head chef was not here today (I think).

I had the Shrimp Scampi pizza, which was absolutely delicious. I had doubt at first since I’m not a big fan of shrimp, especially when it was on a pizza. It turned out to be umami and flavorful.
Excellent customer service. If you grab a seat at the kitchen bar, you could see the cooking and open fire (if you’re into it).

Finally had a chance to go to Mel’s after hearing such great things about it from people in the neighborhood. The food was excellent, every dish. The salads were perfect and even the eggplant entree was amazing. Pizza was spot on (both pomodoro and truffle), dessert was perfect. My 2 year old had a blast, but this is a venue for all occasions — couples were these too. Large place so things felt very private. Service was great too. Will definitely be back.
