Wanted to give this restaurant a try due to its popularity for udon. Walked in on a Monday 5 pm therefore no wait which was great. The appetizers were my favorite rather than the udon. The tofu tasted tender and flavorful. The sushi mackerel was just as good. As for the udon I got niku which tasted okay, the broth was good. Good experience at raku.

The BEST udon EVER!!! My brother, who lives in NY, brought me and my mom here for lunch. He ordered everything for us, and it was perfect!

We had sabazushi and chicken tatsuta-age for appetizers. Loved them!!! For our main entrees, we had vegetable udons and added shrimp tempura toppings. Loved the noodles and tempura toppings.

I tried Raku in Toronto before and wanted to see how the one in New York compares.  I got a dipping udon with tempura. The udon was nice and chewy and I really liked the tempura -- especially the shiso leaf one. The tempura was not too oily and had a good texture. The dipping sauce was nice as they put the condiments separately and you can add it as you desire. I think the wasabi was mixed with something,  which was not really to my taste.
The staff were fast and attentive and the seating area is nice.
Overall it was pretty good!

Winter is around the corner, and I find myself craving for hot soup and noodles more often. I was impressed by Raku’s cold dipping udon last time, but their warm udon is EVEN BETTER! I almost drank up the entire bowl of hot soup.

We went to their East Village location, which was much smaller and more cramped than the other locations. I highly recommend making a res to avoid the wait (yes, there’s a wait even on weekdays!)

If you don’t want to splurge on their wagyu udon ($35 for American Mishima or $42 for Japanese A5 Miyazaki beef), gyunan would be the perfect choice. The beef was so tender and juicy that I enjoyed every bite of it. It almost melted in my mouth. Compared to wagyu, prime beef was less heavy and had a lower fat ratio.

How could they keep the chewiness and bounciness while serving the udon in hot broth!? I am usually picky about udon soup’s texture, but this one ticked every box.

Let’s talk about the soup — it looked clear but it was actually bursting with flavor. It gave me enough warmth and coziness.
