I found the experience to be quite underwhelming, especially considering the one-star hype. The famous dosa was visually appealing, but the potato filling was uneven, clumpy, under-seasoned, and excessively oily. However, I did enjoy the tomato dip the most. The tiger prawns were delicious, but I wish the sauce had been more thoroughly cooked into them. At around $28 for two pieces, the price felt steep for what was offered, though the sauce was the most flavorful part of the dish. The most disappointing dish was the oxtail—it was bland, under-seasoned, and lacked even basic salt. On the other hand, the flaky bread was perfectly cooked and could be enjoyed on its own. The passion fruit dessert was light and refreshing, with the pavlova layers being especially delicious. My friend celebrated her birthday here, and the accompanying vanilla bean ice cream was a nice touch.

The service was great—our server was very friendly—but the food took quite a while to arrive. Overall, while I appreciate the concept of home-cooked meals and found the food authentic, I don’t think the quality justifies the high prices.

I really enjoyed several of the dishes - the beef short rib in particular was excellent and something I would be excited to get again. The cocktails were good but nothing special, which diminishes the experience somewhat. The only other criticism I have is the health inspection rating - a B rating is very disappointing for a restaurant of this quality and price. I would definitely come back for the beef rib and gunpowder dosa when we had a special occasion. The service is exceptional as well, and definitely makes the experience better.

Our waitress was fantastic, however, things like giving you a new plate for each course & an un chilled glass of wine is something you would except from a Michelin Star restaurant.

Semma is an absolute gem, and our dining experience here was nothing short of spectacular. The masala dosa was truly exceptional—perfectly crisp, flavorful, and one of the best we’ve ever had. The Paniyaram was another highlight—three small bites of absolute deliciousness, beautifully presented in a traditional Indian style. The sauce that accompanied it was the perfect pairing, elevating the dish to brilliance. I would highly recommend trying it as an appetizer.

The drink we tried was incredibly refreshing, complementing the meal beautifully. The interiors are stunning, with elements that celebrate traditional South Indian culture in such an authentic and thoughtful way. It creates a warm and welcoming ambiance that pairs perfectly with the exceptional service. Sona and her team were amazing—they took such great care of us and made us feel like valued guests.

The food overall was extraordinary, and the Michelin star is well-deserved. The Shahi Tukda dessert was the perfect indulgence to end our meal—rich, decadent, and infused with saffron, which you could taste in every bite. It was simply divine.

If you can get a reservation, this place is amazing!  You will have to put a $50 per person deposit that will be credited on your bill. Michelin star restaurant! The food & drinks are second to none!  We had the Tiger Prawns, Gunpowder, Short Ribs, and the Oxtails. For the cocktails we had the Old Fashion and the Negroni. The drinks we strong and perfectly crafted. One of the best restaurants in NYC!

Att äta på Semma var en dröm som gick i uppfyllelse. På tisdagen stod Shobha och jag i kö utanför restaurangen i hopp om att få gå en sväng - in. Vi väntade nästan fyrtiofem minuter, gav våra namn och fick veta att vi skulle sätta oss klockan 17. Hallelujah! Vi knöt band med en annan indian och bestämde oss för att sitta och äta tillsammans så vi kunde beställa mer mat. Innan vi gick in fick vi en uppfriskande drink med små glas kyld kokos, apelsin och passionsfrukt. Sedan gick vi in och personalen hade alla ställt upp sig för att hälsa på oss. Jag var så glad att vara där att jag fortsatte att berätta för alla. Innan vi började beställa fick vi tre varma dumplings. Vi beställde flera rätter: den berömda Krutdosan som hade en djup gyllene glans och var krispig. Doppad i kokosnötchutney och sambar, transporterades jag omedelbart till Bombays stränder. Eral Thokku (räkor) hade mycket kryddor och var rik och smakrik. Mattu Iraichi Sukka (nötkött kort revben) var mör och aptitretande. Dindigul Biryani (get biryani) var lika läcker och parothasen var flagig. Vi åt så mycket vi kunde och kände oss sedan långsamt fyllda till brädden. Vi klarade knappt desserten. Jag hade begärt att få träffa kocken Vijay Kumar som hade vunnit James Beard-priset för bästa kock i New York State i år. Det här priset är den högsta utmärkelsen en kock kan få och är Oscarsgalan i den kulinariska världen. Kocken Kumar var en fröjd att träffa och skrattade, när jag efter att ha skakat hand sa till honom att jag inte skulle tvätta händerna på en vecka! Hassan, Shashi, Vishal, Dennis, Nash, Ilyas och Team Semma var vänliga, professionella och gjorde vår middag mycket trevlig.

Vi hade mycket tur att få ett bord för denna fantastiska restaurang. Min son hade förföljt det på sociala medier i ungefär 12 månader. 

Vi beställde Eral Thokku & en Kal Dosa för att starta. Båda var fantastiska. 

Vi hade sedan Mattu Iraichi Sukka, wow

Till huvudrätt hade vi Goanese Oxtail, Valiya Chemmeen Moilee & Dindigul Biryani. Vi åt två portioner kokosris . Varje måltid var munvattnande

Kocken Vijay Kumar driver showen på Semma, där det regionala sydindiska köket visas upp fullt ut. Det här är äkta indisk matlagning som inte lever upp till amerikanska förväntningar, och om några av rätterna är okända, luta dig mot personalen som kan sina saker och är ivriga att dela med sig. 
Ett bett i och du lär dig snabbt att denna matlagning är hjärtat. Rätter är kryddiga, men värmen används lika elegant som den är frikostigt. Börja med mulaikattiya thaniyam, kockens barndomssnacks som spricker av smak. Krutdosan, en klassisk ris- och linscrêpe fylld med potatismasala, finns på varje bord av en anledning. Attu kari sukka faller - isär mört lamm i en mörkbrun curry redolent av varma kryddor.

Det här var väldigt meh... Jag är indian och så jag vet god indisk mat och det här var meh. 
Dosan är toppen. Men dosa är ett enkelt livsmedel och du kan få bra dosas överallt. . . 
Det får mig att undra vad som händer med Michelin start rating system, och ärligt talat med NYT värderare i år.

Det är bra för icke-indier att ha mer. För mycket hypad och mycket begränsade alternativ. Det är 200 gram ghee en gömd en längs all mat du beställer. Smaken är ok men ghee förstör den. Alltid fullt och behöver göra en reservation om inte du kommer inte att släppas in. Lita aldrig på en indisk restaurang där färre indianer ses.

Helt gudomligt! Från cocktails till förrätter och varmrätt. Krutdosan är äkta vara liksom Biryani. De var också mycket söt med barnen och gjorde dem en mindre kryddig dosa. Sammantaget förtjänar denna plats alla spekulationer det får.

Den har en stjärna så den blir inte billig, så fin! Men det var en besvikelse att jag skriver en recension - vilket jag sällan gör. Checken var stor, som nämnts, men de extra $ 150 och sedan gav mig en "rabatt" på samma belopp men uppmuntrade mig att toppa på det högre numret. Vad är det för voodoo-nonsens? (Förklaringen var att en reservation gav rabatt. . . . . . såg vi ut som turister? ? ? ) Sedan, strax efter det var vi långt ifrån - trevligt talat om att vi måste gå eftersom bordet var reserverat för någon annan? ! ? ! . Jag antar att i New York, kommer denna typ av beteende inte att få dig att stänga ner som efterfrågan är där, men jag hoppas genom mun till mun att denna upplevelse blir socialiserad nog att få åtminstone några potentiella kunder att tänka två gånger. Maten var bra, men knappast bra och definitivt inte tillräckligt för att motivera nästan $ 200 per person fliken (alkohol var en del av det, men bara några drinkar vardera, inte en dyr vinflaska). Sammantaget gick vi därifrån leende åt det absurda i det hela. Jag älskar indisk mat, men jag kommer aldrig att gå i närheten av det stället igen. Det är inte en topp 10 - plats för mig så långt som indiska restauranger går i NY, men om du vill ha en overprices avskyvärd plats, det är definitivt Michelin stjärnmärkt i det avseendet.

Jag har velat äta på Semma länge men lyckades aldrig få en bokning. Så, när en öppen plats dök upp (på Resy-appen) för en 9 : 15 PM sitter på 1 / 1 / 2025 jag tog den. 

Min fru och jag kom några minuter före 21:00 och var positivt överraskad över att sitta omedelbart . . Jag förväntade mig att behöva vänta i baren (eller ännu värre, utanför). Vår servitris var vänlig och tog sig tid att förklara de olika alternativen på menyn. 

Min fru beställde ett glas rödvin och jag började med ett glas Surya Udhayam. 

Vi beställde tre tallrikar - en vardera från den lilla (Paniyaram) , medelstora (Mattu Iraichi Sukka) och stora (Ghee Roast Lamb Chops) . 

Paniyaram var utsökt och precis rätt förrätt för att starta vår middag. 

Vi beställde en sida av kokosris och Kal Doas att äta med Mattu Iraichi Sukka. Jag använde Kal Doasa som wrap med Mattu Irachi som fyllning, vilket passade bra till Surya Udhayams glas. 

Vår huvudmåltid var Ghee Roast Lamb Chops, som serverades med Pullav. Köttet var mört och saftigt... smakrikt och gott... och smälte i munnen. 

Vi avslutade middagen med Shahi Tudka desserten . . . ett passande slut för en underbar måltid. 

Bra service och utsökt äkta sydindisk mat.

Maten är mycket innovativ och väl presenterad. Cocktails lika exotiska. Servicen var perfekt ner till att hälsas vid bordet av chefen. Det är dyrt - verkligen dyrt för en restaurang som kan tyckas vara mycket avslappnad. Dosan är lätt den bästa jag någonsin haft. Disken var allmänt hit och miss. Bananbladsfisken var så benig att den gränsade till läskig. Squashrätten var medelmåttig. Parottan var underbar. Lammet var smakrikt och andra rätter var knappt minnesvärda. Lyckligtvis var vi 6 personer ner vi hade en hel del variation. Var jag tillbaka? Möjligen men inte definitivt - det var en 4 av 5 upplevelse till 5-stjärniga priser.

En mycket intressant restaurang med en intressant meny, mycket annorlunda än dina vanliga indiska restauranger. Vi gjorde familjestil för att provsmaka mycket mat. Nästan allt var gott, men krutdosan och det kryddade lammet var kvällens stjärna. Det mesta av maten var glutenfri vilket gjorde mig oerhört glad. Sammantaget är deras mat ganska kryddig, och då menar jag inte varm kryddig utan en massa olika starka smaker. Om du har en känslig gom eller inte kan hantera starka smaker som kardemumma och spiskummin etc. .. är detta inte restaurangen för dig. Servicen var vänlig men SUPER bråttom. Det kändes nästan som om jag åt på en snabbmatsrestaurang. Jag förstår att de vill vända på borden för en vinst, men de måste förstå att gästerna också gillar att äta långsamt och njuta av sin utekväll. Min man till exempel sa att han aldrig kommer tillbaka, det var inte en avkopplande kväll och maten var genomsnittlig. Att få en bokning är mycket svårt, men jag tror att det är värt att gå en gång för att prova det om du gillar indisk mat. Jag ger den mitt GoldnAdvice-godkännande.

I år har jag planerat för den bästa indiska restaurangen i NYC och idag besökte vi Semma. Semma ägs av samma restauranggrupp: Unapologetic Foods och de äger andra elit indiska restauranger (adda, Dhamaka, Masalawala & Sons, etc. . ) i staden också.

De försöker omkoda begreppet tungt kryddad mat, de skriver också in en identifiering av indisk mat med tungt kryddad mat. 

de fick Michelinstjärnan 2022 & 2023 . New York Times satte nyligen upp Semma på restauranglistan 2023. Det är på en remsa av gamla standby restauranger och barer på Greenwich, så det får höga poäng för läge. Semma är känd för sin nej-rädsla inställning till sydindisk matlagning. 

Vi hade en reservation på 915 PM och fick bordet på baksidan. det var tyst där, inte i stora matsalen, så det fungerade för mig.

** Krutdosa: väl av 5 varor vi beställde, skulle jag betygsätta det # 1 Jag antar att detta är den bästa dosa jag någonsin haft och jag använder sällan termen "någonsin". och, sambhar var bra också, jag njöt verkligen av det och om jag inte behövde prova andra rätter, skulle jag ha beställt det igen.

** Eral Thokku [tigerräkor med grön chili & curryblad tigerräkor blandat med torrkokt masala, perfekt kryddig, gott att gå med side Parotta. Smaken på Eral Thokku med massiva tigerräkor var mycket bra faktiskt 4 . 5 /

** Attu Kari Sukka [Lamb sukha med svart kardemumma, tellicherry pepper: Jag hade bättre Lamm sukha på andra små restauranger. det var saftigt och lätt att förvänta sig att det skulle vara bättre/ 3 / 5 

** Meen Pollichathu: Hela havsabborre insvept i bananblad med ingefära & schalottenlök. Servern öppnade bladet och bredde ut kokosmjölk - baserad sås, här gjorde de fel, en person var allergisk mot kokos och kunde inte äta det. Ändå var det hela utmärkt, blandat med kryddor och sås. 5 / 5 

** Dindigul Goat Biryani: om du är ett fan av Hyderabadi biryani, kasta det & inte beställa. på något sätt jag inte gillade denna biryani, men salan som kom som en sida skål - det vill säga igen, den bästa salan jag någonsin haft - 2. 5 / 5

** Shahi Tukda: min kärlek till Shahi Tukda tar aldrig slut, enkel men ändå överdådig. 5 / 5 

** Elaneer Payasam: Kheer serveras i grund kokos på isen, tjusig stil. det var på huset dock 4/5 

Bra service, god mat. ! ! Jag vet inte varför borden är placerade tätt vilket gör det svårt att ha privatliv, samtidigt är restaurangen mycket högljudd, 

Ett fantastiskt tillskott till Greenwich Village (eller NYC för den delen) matplats!

Fantastiskt ställe om du gillar äkta sydindisk mat! (Lite på den kryddiga sidan. . de nivåer som inte är justerbar. . . . tyvärr)

Jag gick med min son igår den 17 juli 2024 för fjärde gången till den här Michelinstjärnan sydindiska restaurangen Semmai men den bullriga atmosfären var riktigt irriterande , sättet som människor går här och där med massor av oväsen och sättet de hanterar besticken var en annan irriterande upplevelse . 

Vi berättade för chefen om detta och om han förstod eller inte hans svar var inte märkbar. Han säger att vi borde boka ett bättre bord! Absurt! Vi sa till honom att bullret kommer att störa även andra kunder 

Som Michelinstjärna ska de förbättra detta och ha en härlig förtrollande atmosfär. Vi kände aldrig att vi gick till en Michelin stjärna restaurang men till en normal kaotisk restaurang. 

Inget att klaga på maten , den var fantastisk som alltid . Det är för många som går upp och ner och för mycket oväsen . Det verkar som om det var fler som jobbade på restaurangen än de som var där inne .

Stor indisk restaurang med bra indisk måltid på Rahi. Jag hade god tid, stor indisk smak av mat & dryck. Personalen är mycket bra & kooperativ.

Maten var fantastisk, atmosfären lysande och personalen så vänlig. Gud maten var god. Prova den här platsen så kommer du att älska det.
